Em hotep, all! I've been working my way through the first volume of the Lichtheim, and so far it's both informative and a lot of fun. By "fun", I mean that I'm finding out that the people of ancient Kemet were the same as people you'd meet anywhere today, with the same concerns, hopes and dreams as the rest of us. Given that the material does seem to be derived from more well-to-do sources, I'd be fascinated to compare it to the ostracons from, say, Deir-el-Medina. My guess is that the workers would have been a little more plain-spoken about both their own concerns and what they thought of the upper classes! (Period graffiti from tombs and temples are often hysterical.) Does anybody know if the material from Deir-el-Medina has been published in a form that's accessible to the reading public?
Of course, my dream is still to actually visit Kemet someday, if I save up my pennies long enough! Sigh...
Senebty! There's the Deir el-Medina Database, but you need to know hieroglyphics since everything is transliterated but not translated. As such, I can only read a few words here and there myself =P
