This had been discussed a few years back. Offering any sort of fake food is not really considered appropriate. One should think of it in terms of "Would I eat this?"

They did use artificial foods as offerings, especially in a funerary context. Figs and other fruit made out of faience, etc. They're also called 'votive' offerings. You could also consider the "voice offering" fake, in a way.

The bread that never gets moldy, the beer that never grows sour. I suspect your intent behind it may matter. If you'd like to offer Hethert beer, but you don't dare drink before going to work, that's in a different league than approaching it as "This stuff is cheap, and I won't ever need to buy more."

Em hotep Nebnetjeruiti. Can you link to me where it has been discussed? If it´s in the private side of the forum you can private message me. I ask because I find it a little strange that if it was done in antiquity then why is there a different attitude about it now?

Thanks Helms! Can you tell me a little more about the voice offering?

Its most famous form is a request on tombs, asking for offerings. If you don't have anything with you, you're asked to make a voice offering. It's sometimes called "Peret-Kheru" as well. Through the power of heka, it causes all sort of goodies to be delivered to the Duat.

"Hetep di nesu Usir neb Djedu, netjer aa, neb Abju, di ef peret-kheru (em) te henqet, kau apedu, shes menkhet, khet nebet nefret ankhet netjer im, en ka en imakhy Senusret, maa-kheru."

“An offering which the King gives (to) Osiris Lord of Busiris, the great god, Lord of Abydos, that he may give invocation-offerings (consisting of) bread, and beer, meat and fowl, alabaster and clothing, and all good and pure things by which a god lives, to the ka of the Revered One, Senusret, True of Voice.”

This particular version is from this blog, on how to read the glyphs.

Some people (including me) recite this at museum displays of mummy cases and actual mummies (replacing the name of the deceased).

You could also think of ushabti and model workshops and boats placed in tombs in this context.

Edit Reason: ushabti!

It has always been my understanding that real offerings have always been preferable and stand-ins were there as a failsafe.
