Reading Recommendations?
« on: December 20, 2021, 12:25:23 am »
Em hotep, all!

I've been perusing the recommended reading list on the main site, and slowly pulling a shelf together for myself. It's a slow process, but nice (since reading helps me better understand things and digest it). I've also been talking with some Hellenic devotee friends who were having The Feels (TM), in a good way, about some literature they recently read.

I was wondering if anyone had any reading recommendations that aren't on that list? My brain is hungry for new books!

Em hotep, Alex!

I remember reading a book as a beginner that’s not on the website’s recommended list, nor on the beginners’ list, but which was a nice warm, gentle read to curl up with—entertaining, informative, human and often humorous, but nothing too heavy or intense. I found out later that Hemet(AUS) had reviewed it. It’s Barbara Lesko’s Red Land, Black Land (Daily Life in Ancient Egypt). Hemet’s review is here: https://www.kemet.org//node/215

Em hotep, Shaseni!

That's very helpful, thank you!

Out of curiosity, are there any authors/researchers that are generally very good and reliable, should their names come up during my Book Quest? Or, conversely, any that I should steer clear of if and whenever possible?

Another idea, Alex...

While, like you, I like books, I found these two free online courses on coursera to be light, informative, and fun. They're supposed to be 6 weeks each in duration, but I binged them in 2 days each while I was waiting for the Beginners' Class to start! 😅 They're both given by Prof. David P. Silverman of  the University of Pennsylvania. They are:

Thank you for the recommendations, Shaseni! And, Rev. Tjesi, I'm glad to hear that my gut feeling on Budge (that is, 'hmmmmmmmmmmmmnah') is correct.

Any recommendations on books compiling myths, by any chance? All the ones I seem to find thus far are either for children, or Budge... and I can't say either strike me as 'great', but I would love something to read during this slow time at work and am definitely lacking in myths and stories of the Netjeru on my shelf.

For myths, I'd recommend Geraldine Pinch's work Egyptian Mythology: A Guide to the Gods, Goddesses, and Traditions of Ancient Egypt
TahekerutAset "Aset's Jewel"
Sat Aset
Meryt Nebet Het, Wepwawet, Sekhmet-Mut, Ra, Mut,  Bast-Mut, Shu, Tefnut
