Title: What do you call your gods?
Post by: Sobeqsenu on April 05, 2016, 03:21:03 pm
Em hotep!

I was browsing through the LAGG thread earlier and started thinking about the things I call my gods that aren't derived from antiquity - and I thought it would be fun to share them. What do you call your gods? Do you say it to Their face(s), or just in conversation? I know I've seen some creative nicknames floating around!

I call Wepwawet "Himself", and Sekhmet-Mut "Herself". I call Wepwawet "The Jackal" (which actually does come from antiquity). I don't actually have all that many creative nicknames, now that I think about it!

Senebty,
Sobeq

I call Amun-ra "ram dad, hidden dad, sun dad." Set is "disco dad, red dad, storm dad" Sekhmet is..Sekhmet lol  or redlady, or "yes ma'am lol" The Heru's get called well, The Heru's.  I don't have that strong a bond with them unlike my parents. I shorten Heru-sa-aset to just Heru-sa. And you can't really shorten Heru-wer much more.

Father mostly... dad only sometimes. Depends if he's striking me as being formal or not at the time.

I call Sobek-Ra Father or crocpop. Hethert is Momma Hethert or cow mom. Yinepu is the jackal man. I don’t really have any extra names for Set, maybe I should come up with something for him?

Collectively, "My NTR," "NTR-Mine," "Team Me."

Set is pretty much exclusively Set (usually "HEEYYYY SET!"), but I think I've called him Red once or twice. I'll refer to him as my father/parent, but I don't usually address him as such. If I'm being Super Formal I might say "Red Lord" or "Lord of Storms," but my favourite Sepithet (get it?) is "Great of Strength."

Wepwawet is "Weppy," Yinepu is "Anpu." Collectively, they are The Jackals.

Heru-sa-Aset is "Heru-sa," Heru-Wer is "Heru" or "Heru-Wer," but "H-dubs" does amuse me.

Wesir is "O."

I like "Mama Taweret" for Taweret, but I don't actually address her all that much.

I usually call them by their names, sometimes with "Lord" in front if I'm feeling formal.

I do sometimes, when talking about Him to others, jerk my thumb upwards and say "Him up there" when referring to Ra, and that seems to go over fine. :P Then again I find it hard to imagine anything that could upset Him, He's always come across to me as really chilled out and mellow.

If I'm feeling really formal, though, I sometimes refer to Ra as "The Radiant Lord", which also seems to go over pretty well.

Bast is usually Bast-momma or something similar. MamaBast, etc. I never actually call my beloveds by anything but their names when I talk to them, but I do talk about them as uncles. I've lately started thinking about Wepwawet as the wolf man, and Amun as rambo, but not to them.

I prefer to call Aset "Mother" because my physical mother is amongst the dead and I make offerings to her and call her "mom" so it confuses them up.

Outside of Their actual names, which I often use...

Set, when formal: Father, Great of Voice, Lord of the Northern Sky, He Before Whom the Sky Shakes, Red Lord, other epithets on occasion.

Set, when not-so-formal: Father, Dad, Big Red, Thunderdad (going with me as Thundercat), Most Metal of the Gods (a recent joke we shared, because iron, and music, and it was funny at the time I swear. *coughs*)

Bast, almost always formal: Mother, Lady, Lady of Joy, Light-bringer, Devouring Lady, Defender of the King.

Heru-wer: General, Sir

Hethert-Nut: Beautiful Lady, Great Cow, Starry One, Mehet-Weret

Heqat: Grandmother, Musician in Hermopolis, Beautiful One, My Lady

I generally call Wepwawet Dad, because with me He is almost the antithesis of formality. Both Seshat (beloved) and Aset (nowhere in my rpd but known for a long long time) are called Mom.

I'm not incredibly creative at coming up with fun titles or names for the Netjeru.  I find myself more often than anything calling Set and Yinepu by Father, sometimes I'll call Set "Storm Father" by what He's well known for.  I will sometimes call Them by "Lord of <insert attribute>", Set / Yinepu.

I'm sooner to call Them by Name and if not that then I will more than likely call Them Father/Fathers.  I think there was only one time I called Set by "Papa Storms".  I haven't done that since then, not for any reason, but just haven't felt that urge to use that identification come about since.  I think that was an attempt to loosen up and be more informal in approaching Him.  Normally I'm rather formal when referring to the Netjeru in general, not just my personal Netjeru.
Title: Re: What do you call your gods?
Post by: Sedjfaiemitui on May 04, 2016, 11:41:26 pm
Even before I was Divined, most Gods I worship(ed) I called "Father" in some capacity, in a formal way -- usually in the form of the ancient "Supreme Lord" appellative "Father of Fathers, Mother of Mothers" -- rather than in a personal way. What few Goddesses I've ever (rarely) petitioned receive(d) "Lady" and occasionally "Mother" -- "Mother" particularly for Taweret, given Her functions and roles. I never use "Mom" or "Dad;" it's just not my style.

The only ones to Whom "Father" applied in a very personal sense were Herishef, Amun(-Re-Banebdjedet), and Set. As I later found out, I am beloved of (Wesir as) Herishef, and not a daughter, so the continued use of "Father" with Him is not even close to literal (inasmuch as "Parent" and "Beloved" are ever conventionally literal). That said, "Father" still applies to Herishef in the sense that He is one of the preeminent deities of Kingship and Creation and so on.

Elsewise, I call Them all "Lord" consistently, and refer to each by a whole host of traditional epithets, many of which are shared between Them. One I have come to use most frequently with my "Great Father," Amun-Re, is "Men-em-Khet-Neb," which means "Who-Endures-in-Everything." Another is "Djefedjef," meaning "[Hidden] Within His Iris [the Sun Disc]." The latter refers specifically to an "iru-complex" of Amun-Re Who is my Father, that of Amun-Re as Banebdjedet. Amun-Re Djefedjef (Amun-Re as Banebdjedet, dwelling within the sun disc) is at the heart of the Solar Mysteries of (New Kingdom through Late Period) Amun Theology.

With my "First Father," Set, I frequently call Him "Father," "Heavenly Father," and of course "Lord." I call Him by many of His traditional epithets, such as "Aapehty" (Great of Strength), "User-Khepesh" (Powerful of Foreleg), "Neb Pet Mehytet" (Lord of the Northern Heavens), "Seda-nef-Pet" (Who-Makes-the-Heavens-Tremble"), "Nega Aa" (Great [Long-Horned] Bull), "Deshr" (The Red), etc. That said, "Father," "Heavenly Father," and "Lord" see the most use.

Tenuously related: In the past, in my "baby Kemetic" days, I'd "seen"/experienced Amun-Re and Set within a triune syncretism, that of a very Northeast Delta-feeling "Set-'Baal'-Amun." It was all of my Fathers at once (plus Egyptianized Hadad, aka "Exotic Set on the Sinai Border"), and while it hasn't happened even remotely often, I have, after a fashion, addressed both of my Fathers by way of this particular syncretism before. So, both my "First Father" and my "Great Father" have been addressed by a shared set of names at once on a few occasions -- chief among this particular list of names being "Netjer Nub," "The Golden God," on the basis of Their/His appearance -- albeit before I knew for certain that They were/are my Fathers. :P To put it into some perspective, the way I have regarded this syncretism of my Fathers (plus Egyptianized Hadad) is similar to the way that Herishef was frequently treated historically, as part of the Herakleopolitan trinity (Herishef-Re-Wesir).

If I'm just praying generally, like saying grace before eating anything I say Netjer. If I'm requesting help from specific Names I just call them their name, like Djehuty if I'm asking for wisdom or Wepwawet to open ways. I guess I'm not very formal about it, but as far as I can tell I haven't got any negative feedback from it. Granted, I don't have the best "god phone" so maybe I just can't hear them and miss their signs.

I'm with MTurner a bit.
Even in Senut, when I am praying for others, I call "Netjer". When I talking with them especially with the Gods of my line up, I call Them for their names. Sometimes, I call Heru-Wer by "Father", and Aset by "Mother". There is no especial namings for Them indeed.

I  wanted to add that I still ask for things/petitions in the name of Jesus/Anpu. (As Anpu is the twin brother of Jesus as I have discovered) Also, my ascendent for my Natal chart on the mundane level is 9 degrees Scorpio so I owe much to Anpu as he is one of my main gods that I petition. ( Hail to you, True Divine Anpu: watcher of the western gate/True Divine Guardian of  the Duat, who is leader of the True Divine Gate.

Have a Great  Day and Great Night!

When it comes to my specific line up, I generally have called my parent Heru-sa-Aset either Lord my Father, or just Father.  For example: "In the Name of my Lord, my Father," or less formal "In the Name of my Father."  With my beloveds I usually just use the titles Lord and Lady unless they want me to use something different if the occasion calls for it.  Rarely do I use Dad, because I don't know why, but for some reason it just feels weird to call Him that, and so far I've only ever done that once in a conversation with a friend.

Sekhmet: "Boss", Red Lady (NOT LIKE GAME OF THRONES). "My Other Mother".

Yinepu: He gets "Handsome" too, come to think of it.  And on very rare occasions, "Puppy".
Title: Re: What do you call your gods?
Post by: Ihhyensenu on May 05, 2016, 04:20:00 pm
Amun-Ra: Papa, Teacher, My Lord

Sekhmet: Ma'am. Boss, Mama-Sekhmet, My Lady, "yeeeeeesssss?" ( when she pokes, like right now ;) )

Yinepu: Uncle, Friend, Anubis, my guide, Sir

Bast ( though not in my lineup): Friend/ Girlfriend, lady-face, Kitty! ( she is usually amused by that)

Everyone else is pretty formal, unless I have a growing relationship with them.

Djehuty's pretty much always been called Djehuty, though I get a very grandfatherly feel from Him, so maybe someday I'll try that and see what He thinks."Grandpa Djehuty"... sounds very cozy and warm to me, which is how He's been.

Set's sort of slipped into "Papa Set" for me, although I'm not divined yet. It just kind of happened; it slipped out once and I haven't stopped. He certainly hasn't told me that He minds, and it's very comforting. :) "Before Whom the sky shakes" is also an epithet I use frequently (often right after calling Him "Papa Set", which He seems to find amusing).

Hethert and Tawaret have both been "Mama" on the few occasions I've addressed Them--much like Set, it's just kind of slipped out.

And Yeshua (Jesus) is the Good Rabbi. ;) I still don't have my Christology properly figured out, and I don't know that I ever will, so whether or not Yeshua's a God to me is still up in the air. *grins and shrugs*

What a delightful thread!
Senebty and shalom,
Dylan.

I don't really have any nicknames for the Gods, but I do usually address Heruakhety as "Great Heruakhety". I can't really remember any more when or where or why that started, but it stuck and just feels right for me now. :)

Sometimes I'll prepend "great" to the other Names as well, but not as often. Other than that, I can't think of any special names that I use regularly.

I enjoy reading all of these!

I call Hethert my Lady Mother, or just my Mother. I feel weird about using "mom" but I will occasionally say "Cow Mom".

Djehuty I refer to as the Great Baboon, more in my head than to him directly. =) For Tefnut, I always feel compelled to use unofficial/UPG epithets: The Defender, My Shield and Protector.

Everyone else gets their names or normal epithets.

I enjoy reading these and I'm glad to know I'm not the only one for sure!

In ritual I always acknowledge Their greatness, but I always address Sobek-Ra and Sekhmet-Hethert as Father and Mother respectively. Set, Heru-sa-Aset, and Djehuty I refer to as Brother. Not like I equate myself with Them on the same level, but I simply feel like They are my family and I feel closer to Them. Even down to dynamics! Heru doesn't say much so He's like the stoic, quiet guardian bro and Set's sarcastic and kind of in my face and Djehuty doesn't speak much directly but I feel like He keeps the peace.

I tend to refer to Ra as Creator because for a long time I equated Him directly with that. Tough habit to shake. Plus he IS the sun god and the sun certainly leads to more life, right? X3 I don't work closely with Bast (she's more for my mother but She IS here around me) but I know I have called Her "Pretty Kitty" and "Sexy Lady" affectionately. VERY affectionately and very carefully because She speaks loudly around here haha! I don't have much goddess energy around me, so I am glad She is around.

HetHert - Mum.
Sobek - Brother.
Wepwawet - Weppy, Brother.

Depends on the situation.  ;D

Em hotep all,

Rev. Sobeq,

I never saw this thread until now ...I must have missed it :)

Yinepu
Informal - The Jackal Dude or the Big J. or on occasion the Dog Man.  (I'm very informal with my Parent)
Formal - Lord of the Shrine of the Desert Crossroads, Royal Child, He who is upon his Mountain, Lord of the Wrappings, Father or Sir.

Amun
Informal - Grandfather, the big goose, King of the Gods
Formal - Lord, Sir, He who hides in plain sight, (I lean towards being formal with Him)

Bast
Informal - the cat lady, aunt (not grandmother)
Formal - Lady of Malachite, The Eye, My Lady (I'm more formal with Her)

Aset
Informal - "That one"
Formal - Queen of Magic, My Lady (I'm very formal with Her always)

HetHert
Informal - She who grins, (I'm more informal with Her)
Formal - Lady of Gold, Lady of Turquoise, Mistress of the West, My Lady

Interesting ....I have more but these are the ones I use the most for my Parent and my Beloveds.

I enjoyed reading these as well.  It was interesting to see how you all see your Gods and what you call them or how you relate to them individually.

Thank you for sharing.

Senebty!

Em hotep, friends!

Oooh, this is lovely. <3 I found the reply I wrote pre-RPD (and while still at a Lutheran seminary, hah!) so this'll be fun to update. :P

Papa Set's still, well, Papa Set. ^_^ If I'm feeling formal or praying for something Super Serious wherein His Attention Right Now Would Be Appreciated . . . I tend to favor "Great of Strength" or "Lord of the Oasis" as His epithets. I never drop the "Papa," though, I just tack on extra smooth and buttery words that tie in some of His attributes to whatever I'm praying for. "Grinning (or Dancing) Sha(-man)" is another one that I love.

And Sekhmet's "Mama," of course. <3 I also call Her "Red Lady," as per Her ancient epithet, and "Strong of Medicine" or "Great Healer." Sometimes "Lady Who Protects the World." . . . "My" Sekhmet seems to be all about healing and strong-willed compassion.

Ptah is usually just that. Sometimes "Beloved Ptah." Sometimes "Grandfather of All." I love Him so. <3 OH! Also, He's "Ptah of the Deepest Peace," or "Ptah of Peace" . . .

Djehuty also falls into "Grandfather" occasionally, although He's usually "Beloved Djehuty". Sometimes "Ibis, oh Night-Sun", or "Truth Speaker" or "Sweet of Speech." (The latter I'm fond of if I'm praying to Him before a job interview or just need some reassurance in talking to someone about a potentially difficult topic.) If I'm struggling to write, I've used "Scribe of the Cosmos" once or twice.

Heru-Wer . . . Sometimes "Uncle," if I'm struggling to comprehend Him (for some reason, my Heru-Wer is very quiet, and only ever appears alongside Papa Set, not-quite-as-Bawy, but evoking that same Presence). But most often He's "Brother of the Blue Sky," alluding to His blue skies being the opposite of Papa Set's grey and stormy ones.

Wonderful, wonderful thread, Rev. Sobeq!! Thanks to everyone for sharing!

Senebty!

A fun thread to read through!

Yinepu: often just Yinepu or Anup, 'Nempu (courtesy of my sister and, when she was living, my
mom); Dad, Father, the Jackal, (my) Black-and-Gold God; various epithets, especially He Who Is Upon His Mountain and Foremost of the Westerners, but also Chief Physician, Judge, Guide and Guardian (of the Living and the Dead alike)

Nut: Nut, Starry One, Star-goddess, the (Patient) Mother. I have sung to Her before as Elbereth Gilthoniel

Set: usually just Set--the name comes off my tongue with all the weight one could ask for; Thunder God, God of Change, Red God, God of Outcasts; "yessir". While I'll describe Him as my uncle, I don't usually call Him that. (My partner, however, will call Him "[your] Uncle Set")

Nebt-het: Nebt-het, Dark Lady, Death, Mourner, Death Midwife, Weeping One

Compiling a short list for Babi this time around, since He's been VERY present the last few months for me. :3

Formal titles I use in shrine include:

Wer-Aa (Very Great)

Ka-Ianu (Bull of the Baboons)

Medes-Merty (Sharp of [Two] Eyes; sometimes simply "Medes," being "Sharp")

Neb Pet (Lord of Heaven)

Neb Shesat (Lord of the Night Sky)

Neb Akhet (Lord of the Horizon)

Pa-Adu (The Aggressor)

Sa Re (Son of Re)

Tepy-Sa en Wesir / Herishef (Firstborn of Wesir / Herishef)

Mek en Re (Protector of Re)

Neb Naref (Lord of Naref)

Neb Henen-nesu (Lord of Herakleopolis Magna)

Neb Pehty imytu Pesedjet em khenu Henen-nesu (Lord of Might in the midst of the Ennead within Herakleopolis Magna)

Aapehty (Great of Strength)

In informal conversation with other people outside shrine: "The Angry Sky-Baboon" and "The Big Bad Baboon." :P He has historically-attested appearances as a tjesem-hound and as a dog-headed God (as in domestic dog, not jackal) -- along with a fearsome demonic entourage of 77 dogs -- but the baboon attributes stand out far more for me than anything else, in the majority of instances. :)

When talking to my husband I often use informal nicknames (for Netjer I feel comfortable with and hopefully won't be offended) so he can keep up with who I mean.

Bast - Bast kitty, especially when talking about Her festival where I celebrate my cats. It's basically cat Christmas.

Wepwawet - Oofy.

Sutekh - Big Red

Djehuty - Beaky

Wesir - Osiris the gardening dude

Anpu - Nooby

Nut - Sky lady

I sometimes refer to Hethert as Cow lady Who owns the city. I live in a town - that likes to call itself a city - called Milton Keynes. If you're from the UK, you'll know us for our roundabouts and concrete cow statues. Cows are a big deal here in MK, so I like to think of Her as our secret patron. We're also a temple to the sun http://sianandjackie.blogspot.co.uk/

Well, it does depend on context somewhat, but generally when speaking to them, I always use their names, Bast, Amunet, and Set.  Usually in that order if addressing all three of them, as that is how they arrived in my RPD.  When talking ABOUT them to someone else, it is usually Mom, Mama, Set.  If I need to distinguish between my mothers, I'll say Mama Bast and Mama Amunet.  I really don't think I've ever called them anything else. ;)

Djehuty is Mr Monkey, in the most loving and respectful way possible.

I once referred to Shu and Tefnut as 'Kitties!' (Tefnut then playfully swatted me. Inner child giggled. Adult me got the message :D)

Usually Shu and Tefnut are 'the Lions', though depending on context I've also included Bast and Sekhmet in that grouping, too.

HetHert
Informal - She who grins, (I'm more informal with Her)

That is the greatest Epithet I have ever heard.   :D :D

Regarding HetHert as "She who Grins" - oh most definitely!  When she is around my mouth hurts afterwards from smiling the whole time ..its so infectious when She smiles ..it just makes you want to do it too!

I agree, that is a lovely epithet for Hethert, Rev. Meres!  "She who grins, " :)

I find myself grinning, too. <3

Hethert - Mum.

I generally refer to the gods as their names. However, despite not being divined yet...I tend to call Heru-wer, Who my attention has shifted more towards this secular year, either "Dad" or by His name. The former is my favorite thing to call Him, though. I get really BIG warm/positive feelings in response.

Edit: Heru-wer is my Dad! And Set is, too!

I was thinking about this a bit lately, and I tend to also be fairly formal and use Their actual names when addressing Them, or on some occasions say Mother & Father (which is slowly becoming more common). But Set is always Set~ :)

Hethert: Hethert, Hethert-Iusaas, Iusaas, Mother.
Heru-sa-Aset: Heru-sa-Aset, Heru, Father.
Set: Set (done and done!)

Em hotep,

I don't know if I've posted to this thread before or not. I like to call Ra Sky-Dad. I feel like it's kind of appropriate. I get distant but fatherly vibes from Him... so... Sky-Dad.

Senebty,
Leaha

I call Sobek Dad. Father just sounds so formal, but anything else sounds too informal.

Bast is Mom.

Sekhmet-Hethert I’ve always referred to as Lady Sekhmet, since I get more Sekhmet than Hethert.

Amun is Lord Amun, I’m not sure why though. It just happened.

I haven’t had much communication with regards to Yinepu-Wepwawet, so I can’t quite say yet.

Wepwawet is Father or Dad, depending on the formality of the situation. Set is usually just Set. Heru-Wer is either Heru, H-dubs, etc. He seems to appreciate the nicknames. Sokar-Wesir is usually "my Lord" or something along those lines.

Hethert isn't in my lineup, but I've been doing a lot with Her help lately-- wedding planning and new job environment that She loves-- and usually she gets "my Lady."

Minha Mãe, para Hethert; Mestre para Djehuty; Minha senhora Amunet e Minha senhora Serqet para meus amados. Quando lido com outro netjer, fora de minha linhagem, sempre meu senhor ou minha senhora precedendo o nome.

Yinepu: Yinepu or Father.  For all the others I just use their names.

For most of Them I typically just use their names, however I do have a bit of a history calling Bast mama or mama Bast.
I had worked with Her before, I think that She is a major influence in my life and my getting involved in Kemetic Orthodoxy.

For me, Set has no problem being called "The Man, The Myth, The Legend™". Of course sometimes I just call Him Set, but He was never big on being called much else, and He knows how much respect I have for Him. With Ptah, however, I try to be a little more formal, using epithets sometimes. It's a little more awkward, though, because I have no idea what He prefers? He seems okay with the way that I address Him, though, so I stuck with it.

For Yinepu/Wepwawet "Father(s)" depending on whether I get one or both of Them

Heru Sa Aset: Heru or Heru Sa Aset. I also work with Heru-wer and Heru Behdety, and I call each of Them by name.

Sekhmet-Hethert: Sekhmet.

I usually call them by their exact names.  It's much easier that way.

Normally I call them by their names.
But I do have some informal ones too lol Bast is always Momma Bast. She's always had this motherly aura when I work with her. Sobek is Croc dad and Anubis is Mr. Jackal

i tend to call Them my Lords and Ladies! i'll refer to Them by name sometimes but the Lord/Lady title tends to slip out more.

Em Hotep!

I call them My Guardians, my Gods, my Parents, My Guidance, also my Lord and Lady as well (left over from my really old Wiccan days), I call them my home, and my family. My resting and Safe space.

Ra is Father (when in super formal situations) Bird Dad or Birb Dad if He’s in a playful mood. Yinepu-Wepwawet is Father in formal situations or sometimes Jackal Dad. My Beloveds I refer to as Aunts.

I've never really said them out loud, because I didn't want to potentially offend Yinepu or not give Him proper honors...BUT, I've got quite a few nicknames for Him in my head.   ;D   "Dog Dad"/"Dog Da", "Yinubis", "Dog God"(it makes me happy since it's a palindrome).

But I tend to call Him "Anubis"; although it's His Greek name, it's just more familiar and comfortable to me and He's communicated that He's okay with it.

Now Sekhmet I've never actually TALKED to.  I just admire Her from afar since I'm too awestruck and shy to approach. But anytime I think of Her, I think of that meme where folks reveal a beautiful thing and say "S H E".  That's basically how I feel towards Her.   ::)

Khepera is Father most of the time, but sometimes I will say Dad.  When I address Him directly though, it is always Father.  I find that Serqet-Aset doesn't really like the term "Aunty" so I tend to call Her by Name, or Lady/Mistress.  Djehuty likes Uncle, but when I am making offerings I tend to call Him by epithets that come to mind at the time, usually in reference to wisdom and/or the moon.

As you can see, I tend to be very formal, heh.

Senebty,
Shu
