Title: Do you have an Egyptian Tatoo?
Post by: Basheta on April 22, 2009, 11:04:04 pm
Em Hotep everyone,

I was reading a different question and kathleen made a comment about her tatoo. I have one also. I have been asked if it is a ladybug and a junebug... I don't know what made them think that. It goes around my left wrist and I thought I would share and see who else had Egyptian tat's. This was taken with a cell phone, so just remember that. LoL

Senebty,

Eshe

I really like your tattoo, Eshe!

I have one. It's Djehuty, in the form of a   flying ibis (http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh82/bunji144/P2270013.jpg). I didn't want something really super Egyptian... I wanted it more neutral. I'm thinking of getting another one, maybe Djed pillar, or even my Shemsu name. But this wouldn't be for a while.

Nice tattoo!

I have a solid black ankh between my shoulder blades. I only got it done last week so no pictures yet.

Hotep!

Two out of seven are Egyptian:

Aset (http://www.flickr.com/photos/babyblade/941780354/sizes/o/in/set-476296/). She is from just below my shoulder blade to just above where my bra goes around my back, on the left side.

Lotuses (http://www.flickr.com/photos/babyblade/940936059/in/set-476296/). On my right ankle.

Interesting that people ask you if it is a ladybug or junebug. Can't figure out how they see that. I have Udjat eyes with feathers on my back but do not have a good picture of them at this time.

I have a total of 7.  The glyphs for my Mother's and Beloved's names are on my back, an ankh on my sternum, and a stylized udjat on each arm.  Pics are being elusive.  More are planned of course.

There really is heka to getting them done, particularly the names.  I could feel it as they were being done, Serqet's name was the most pronounced feeling.  I could feel the heka seeping in with each puncture of the needle.  It will forever change you.  Definitely not something to be done lightly.

I don't have any, but I would like a traditional depiction of Yinepu done on my back at some point and though not Kemetic, also one of a red fox.

If my tats didnt hurt soooooo bad i would love to get a pectoral plate like the pharohs necklaces, but that intricate work costs thousands, i shopped around!!
In the mean time, when i learn my shemsu name I shall get that on my wrist with some lotus blossoms. and my folks and beloveds in glyphs on my back wit the wings of Aset strategically located in the center... oooowch!!
I have an udjat on my sternum, my goverment name(ha) in glyphs on my back.

This isn't really something that any of us can really suggest to you. A tattoo is a permanent thing (obviously) and should mean a lot to you. All of us that have a tattoo of a god or goddess have a close relationship to that god or goddess, and that's why we picked it. For the most part, we have tattoos of our Parents or Beloveds that we find out during the Rite of Parent Divination. You can also undergo this divination after the Beginner's course. I'm not getting into tremendous detail because I don't want to stray too much off topic. If you have more questions, feel free to search for similar threads to the topic you are interested, start a new thread, of you could always PM me if you want :)

Also tattoos of Gods (whether depictions or Their Names written) require special care as the depiction of a thing is seen as being that thing.

Djeffree, no one can tell you which God (if any) to get tattooed on your body.  That is a personal decision between you and the Names involved.  If you are asking about who your beloved Gods are specifically according to the Kemetic Orthodox meaning of the term, then this is something that can only be determined via divination after the completion of the beginners course.

Hope that helped.  :)

I have my ink posted on another thread in this forum. Maybe I can scrounge up links to pictures of them. I have a bow across my shoulders, pointing up with the arrowhead just below my neck, on either side the ends are carved into jackal heads for my father. I have an ankh with a feather of ma'at in the stem on my left shoulder and a stylized medallion with Set's image on my left forearm on the inside. I can representations, but so far have been told "no actual images of me on you" from them.

To come: Shemsu name on the backside of my forearm (it's looong spelled out)with more Set symbolism as he see fits (kinda like merit badges, I've been making tons of progress hehe) and two winged scarabs on my collar bone area. (to be done in henna first to see if I like it)

Em Hotep!

After learning my name, I have changed my mind a bit on what ink to get.  Like Taji said have to be very careful on what and where you get a Name's name..  Like dont haul off and get Set's name on your bikini line.. :S however maybe Heru-Wer would think thats cool, i dont know about that.... In the mean time I now intend (if I could scan i would post it) to get in the middle of my back:  Ra-Heruakhety cleverly disguised as an Egyptian king with the sun behind his head reaching down through clouds and my shemsu name (boy,is it long) in a cartouche on the cloud directly under the King.. And i am probably going to cry like a baby. Cause its going to hurt... :(

It's not nearly as bad as you might think :)

I have the lowest tolerance to pain among people I've met in my entire lifetime, hah. I still managed to sit through over an hour-long tattoo on the inside of my arm. Did it hurt? Can't tell you it didn't, but it was totally doable and tolerable. Your adrenaline really kicks in and helps you out once the first line is down.

I need a tat buddy! To hold my paw! When i got the glyphs on my back i thought i was going to die. and when i got the Udjat on my chest I thought the tatoos guy's breath was gonna kill me :S I survived that one. barely.... lol

haha I was dying by the end of my tattoo on my arm, but I still think I totally psyched myself up for 98% of the pain. But when that adrenaline wears off at the end, I did want to knaw my own arm off... of course by that point the idea of "I have no choice now but to finish this" kept me going, rofl.

HA Right, after he started you cant tell the guy to stop and have a half Ankh, so you gotta suck it up and endure. Love of Ink is pain! I have one on my arm, I thought that was the easiest, wish I had more arm room! I think an Egypty tramp stamps would look cute, but know i could not tolerate it. Its sensitive back there.
Title: Re: Do you have an Egyptian Tatoo?
Post by: VioletSkies on July 21, 2009, 11:32:32 pm
Kemetic tramp-stamp would look pretty cute, I personally don't have the body for it, but on someone else it would ;) LOL -- I just never display that part of my body. I really have little interest in tattoos I can't display fairly easily. I like people to see it.

My tattoo isn't Kemetic in nature at all, in fact my husband designed it and it is more of a match to his. He has a Celtic cross tattoed on his left forearm, and I have a celtic-knot with a small cross attached to it on my left forearm (which was his design). It represents my roots (celtic roots from back home, and the strong good Christian influences from back home [true and honest loving Christians, not the ones who fake loving everyone] -- But I'm intending to have it extended, so that it connects up with a pentagram and an Ankh (two more facetes of my history and faith).

I want my left arm to some day be a tattoo history of me :) If I go through it, I want it on my arm. I think that'll be my task over the years :) ... now all we need is the moolah to do it :P

We just won a radio contest with our tattoos! We won VIP passes to the Blink 182 concert (rehersal show the day before, dinner backstage, and tickets to the concert), our tattoos were picked as winners :)

I have a variety of tattoos. Only one is Kemet-themed.

Half-sleeve (lower left arm) of Set battling Apep amidst wind and lightning and storm clouds. Set is wrapped in the serpent's coils but has a spear thrust through its head (in through the open mouth, popping out the back of the head in a blood spray).

About ten hours total work so far. It's time to touch it up again soon and connect it to the upper arm.

I dont have the body for a trampy stampy either!  Your hubby designs tats? hmmmm One day if I send ya'll a drawing can he draw it all professional like, so I can have it done.  Cant draw to save my life.
I agree why get it if you cant show it! The Udjat always is an awkward conversation starter. Its hard for people to look in my eyes while talking.  Their eyes will always fall to the Udjat (it gets all the attention!) I say if you stare at it long enough it will wink!

Nah. After he got his first tattoo, he drew some mock-ups of what he might like to get down the road. When I came along, he took one of the designs he had already drawn, and re-designed it to create my tattoo. He's creative but, not a professional.

Can see it here (http://www.twowaydetour.com/images/wedding31.jpg) (wedding photo), and   here (http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs169.snc1/6332_100393253305393_100000041560944_8761_7711489_n.jpg)  (facebook) -- The whole thing is going to be extended if we ever have the cash, but we just moved into a new place and we're busy sinking money into new sofas, oof.

My husband went on to get a second tattoo last month, it's an Edmonton Oilers tattoo on the back of his arm. *** Please note for the squeamish: There are pictures of a tattoo being needled below.

A "tramp stamp" is a way of saying a lower-back tattoo. It does mean what you think it does, but only in a half-serious way.

Right!
I dont think I would get a name there, but something Egypty, lotus, dancers, a scence from a text. Like I am really fond of Tut and his wife (from his chair found in his tomb-it is that very well know representation of him other than the mask) When heck freezes over, when I get married going to get that scene somewhere, but yikes where!?
If I were to get a name tat somewhere I think I would put it on my upper back, upper arms, shoulders.  No where trampy, however if Heru-Wer is your name I think he would think it was freakin awesome! HA! Alright dont qoute me on that...

They are playing GM Place (Vancouver, BC, Canada).

Re: Tramp stamp

LOL, it's half-joking when most people say it, including me -- and I'd usually only say it to someone I knew wouldn't get offended (something someone else and I said to each other in a bit of a side-conversation) -- it's just to identify the location as I've always known it as a tramp-stamp 'round here. It's said in a tongue-in-cheek manner, the fact that I'd get one if I had the body for it should tell you that I don't see anything negative about them.

Hope no one got bent out of shape over the terminology ;) Life's too short to be too serious!

*awkwardly jumping into thread*

Nei, none of my tats are Kemetic in nature, as a matter of fact most of my tattoos are Ásatrúar in nature. For a time I had thought of getting a Kemetic tat, but, ultimately, with deep contemplation, I decided against this.
But, I've seen fólks with some really neat Kemetic tats. If I can remember the name of the book (the last name of the fellow who wrote it was Rush, that is all I can remember off of the top of my head) I'll post it, but, this fellow wrote this book about tattoo and its spiritual relevance and things, and for some of the shots in the book he was a model and this guy is covered almost head to toe in Kemetic tats (I think he stated in one of his books that he's a Kemetic Reconstructionist of one order or another, I'm scatterbrained like mad right now)...but now I'm rambling...there was apoint in there somewhere, I might remember it too eventually.

Ást,
Brynhildur

I have to hold off on any tattoos for a few more years, but I want to get some kind of sprinkling of stars across my chest in honor of Nut. The other one I want is a was-scepter along my spine in honor of Wepwawet & Yinepu. I probably picked two of the most painful places to put the damn things! XD They're both still a concept without a set design, which I'll develop in time.

I partly have to wait until I'm out of school (my mom doesn't like tattoos and although given the placement she would probably never know, I don't want to have to hide them), and partly because I want to see Who turns up in my RPD and whether it would still be appropriate to get the tattoos even if Nut and Wepwawet/Yinepu aren't Parents or Beloveds. I still feel pretty strongly about the tattoos, one and two years after I thought of them, so that may be a good sign. :)

If your ideas stick, they are probably good.

My inspiration for my sleeve literally came in the middle of the night. I woke up suddenly with the full idea in my head and it wouldn't let go of me. Six years on now it's still just as powerful.

As for painful spots, yes, the chest and spine kind of suck, as does the elbow (I had a bruised humerus for two weeks once), but it's really not the worst pain you could endure. Embrace the suck, and it will carry you.

BTW, here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/khesret/sets/72157621784924395/) are some pictures of my sleeve. They aren't accurate 100% to its current state, as this was back in '03 before the coloring was finished. Also, it has recently been reworked and touched up, so I would say they are about 85%, and the main design remains unchanged except that Set's eyes are yellow and red, his collar and armlets are gold, his kilt is purple, and his spear is brown-gold. I would give you updated pics, but the end of the year has eaten my camera.

Thats an awesome tattoo Khesret....

I only have the one egyptian tattoo.. an Udjat on my right upper arm (its green, purplish blue, and a sky blue) I plan on getting it reworked in September a bit and adding my Shemsu name. I'm also working on balancing that out with one of Dad on my left upper arm...but the design I'm finding a bit difficult. I want him in griffin form, but with the "egyptian" wings and his proper "crown" (kinda like  this (http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/beasts2.jpg) , but sitting)....wish I knew a kemetic tattoo artist...

Khes, awesome tats!  Embrace the suck! I love it. lol

Yea been to all the best(freaking sweet ink) shoppes we have here in the Burgh. Now, there are tat shoppes, then there are TAT shoppes.. There is like 5. The artist's are rather sh*tty when it comes to their work, I guess I would be too! Recently, fella told me his fee just to draw it would be $100. Which is better than not having it drawn at all. And one guy told me once he drew it, it was not allowed to leave the store till I came back to get it done.

A lot of times shop rates depend on the rent and how much of a cut the shop owner takes out of the artist's pay. This is why I like to tip cash, and tip well. It tends to get me a better deal all around because it goes straight into the artist's pocket. If they take up time drawing something, that's time they could be tattooing, so it can cost. Still in this as in many things, you do get what you pay for.

And if it's an offering to honor a Name, well, would you really be of a mind to go for the cheapest deal you can find?

Here is my newest one :D It gets color in a couple weeks when I go back out to San Diego. This is based off of the tarot card "The Magician" I drew all the concept work and let the artist put his own style into the piece. Such a light hand, three hours seemed like nothing. The color will take another four hours when I go back.

Technically 2 of my 3 are Egyptian related...

My first on my left ankle is Bast in Her cat form.

My second on my inner left wrist is a sistrum.

My last one is actually my cat, Pharaoh Mau's, eye marking on my inner left bicep. Oddly enough I get asked all the time if that also has to do with Bast!! I just smile and say, "Just one of Her son's." ;-)

A giant scarab on my upper back with outspread wings reaching to just before where my shoulders start. The outline would be brown/blackish and the coloration would be bronze. ^_^ Unsure if I want to add in some random turquoise shading though for more 'oomph'. Eventually, if I decide to get find out who I am the daughter of, I will put on the back of the scarab, "daughter of so and so' and somewhere on the wings put the name(s) of my Beloved(s). That's the idea so far.... any comments or ideas?

I’ve thought about getting a Egyptian Tattoo before but my idea is sort of weird. Basically on my right foot (my dominant foot) in a band I want a prayer that basically acts as a prayer to bless all the places I may go and on the left one as a prayer and reminder to leave the places I’ve been better than they were before. I figured it would not only be awesome but good heka. Unfortunately I don’t trust that tattoo places around here or have the money.

I've been holding off waiting for my Shemsu bookmark to arrive...but as I sent it off last Feb. and still haven't heard anything, it must not have arrived. I know Hemet is super busy, so I was hoping maybe someone else could help me. Please?

Thanks so much,

Yeah I have had the ashes mixed in for several tattoos. All the artists have been cool with it. The ashes are purified because the heat is so hot during cremation, all germs are destroyed. It is just a small amount of ashes for symbolic purposes. I sifted them through a sieve, also, so there would not be big pieces.

It's on my right shoulder.  The little digital marks are from the shadow... that picture is the one I use to show the design.  Just FYI, it is REALLY awkward to scan a shoulder.

For reference, though, here I am still kind of bleeding.  I mean, you can't really see it (or I wouldn't post it), but there's a big glob of blood running down because the tattooist left briefly:

There are some amazing pieces being shown off here, and what makes them even more special is the meaning that goes behind each one.
To many people go into a shop and just get something thrown on because they "want to be inked" and end up regretting the result later.
But having a piece that has a genuine, deep meaning makes it so much more special.

I've been planning a piece of my own for a while now which I would like to have across my shoulders, but am still in the process of planning.

My original idea was to have the wings stretching across my shoulders, with the two reclining jackals and the cartouche being somewhat smaller then shown here so as to fit more snugly between my shoulder blades.

The name in the cartouche was initially intended to be my own, although I've considered having it be for Yinepu instead since it struck me as being something self-glorifying to have my own name depicted in a royal fashion, and it may work better to have this as a dedication to Him (and would mean a future tattoo for Seth in his honour).

I would prefer for it to be full colour, but I tend to be pretty picky when it comes to colour and I may have it outlined first and colour added at a later date (as I've done with my Utahraptor tat).

My biggest concern is the space it would take up.  The back is a very large canvas, one of the more prominent on the human body and considering the space this would take up, it would more or less set the theme for the rest of my back; so if I decided to have another image placed under it that had nothing to do with Egypt, they tend to clash.

Nevertheless, I really enjoy this image, and if in the end I decide not to have this as a tattoo, I would nevertheless love to see it as perhaps a tapestry or large print.  It would make an awesome backdrop to my alter.

How amazingly beautiful idea!! Have you taken it in to an artist? Sometimes they can really help bring an idea together -I will be getting my tattoo done soon and will finally have a pic up. My artist saw my vision and made it come to life! If you still want a tapersty -try Etsy.com and work with an artist that makes artwork you like and see if they can make one: if they can please share ;) I would love to have that in my house as well!!

I have two at the moment. The first is a conglomeration, I suppose, of Bast and Sekhmet. This was my very first tattoo and the picture is from when it was fresh, about 7 years ago when I was 17.
    First tattoo (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v607/this_distrust/Urban%20Fairy/oihwglebgio.jpg)

I have some plans to cover it up with a blue lotus and redo it with the determanitives on the Names, now that I know a lot more, but who knows when that'll happen.

Underside of my left arm (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs652.snc3/32196_531244914541_77000779_31162387_2706331_n.jpg)
This tattoo is only about two or three weeks old now and the picture is from the day I got it. I'd been thinking about it for about a year but couldn't settle on a spot. I finally ended up putting it below my wrist tattoo on the underside of my left arm. I think I may get something else on my right side, under that wrist tattoo since I like symmetry but tattoos aren't slap-dash to me and I do a lot of thinking about the meaning and why I want it before I get it.

For the curious, here's my wrist tattoos about a minute after they were done about 6 years ago.
     Wrist tattoos (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v607/this_distrust/Urban%20Fairy/amberstattoos.jpg)
People often mistake it for Egyptian, but they're Blackfoot(well, Blackfoot-ish since I did make up the composition myself and yes, it's supposed to be crooked. I didn't want the artist to polish what I drew on the paper at all)

Just got mine yesterday, so there's a ton of healing left to go! It's an udjat based off a necklace found with Tut's pile o' ancient shinies.

Excellent, excellent. More ink from me soon. This time, it will likely be glyphs, perhaps with something else for extra kick.

I hope no one minds me bumping this thread, but I am a total tattoo junkie!

Here are my Egyptian tattoos:

  Above right boob (http://www.flickr.com/photos/reneenicoleschwarz/5414133996/)
It's my favorite Beatles quote, and I think it combines with the concept of Ma'at quite well :)

  Above left boob (http://www.flickr.com/photos/reneenicoleschwarz/5413534091/)
^^ is the Arabic equivalent of "Aset/Isis," which I've had several Middle Eastern friends verify :)  I'll probably add more to this one eventually.

  Upper left arm (http://www.flickr.com/photos/reneenicoleschwarz/5413534123/)
I know, I know, I know, it says, "Isis," but in my defense I had this one done years before I knew anything about Kemetic vs Hellenized names.  I still love it.  This one took 5 hrs.

  Back of right shoulder (http://www.flickr.com/photos/reneenicoleschwarz/5414146194/)
The ankh is a little wonky, but I like the font.

These are unrelated, but here are the remaining 2 tats of my some of my other obsessions, Phantom of the Opera, and moths :)

Those are all so totally awesome!  I like the "powered by Netjer" and, of course, the Phantom of the Opera.  Very nice choice!  :)

My very first tattoo was of Ma'at's feather, on the back of my neck. I don't have a very good picture of it, but I like it - though I'm usually asked if it's a quill. :P
I only have one other tattoo, and it's of Erzulie Dantor's veve on my left shoulder.
This thread makes me want more tattoos NOW! But I'm broke. *pouts*

Seeing everyone's tattoos has made me so excited about when I can get mine done!

I'm planning on getting an ankh tattooed on me, as well as something symbolizing my Parents, but I still need to decide what :)

I have thought about designing tattoos. I would love that, but I am needle phobic. So getting a tattoo is not in my future.

Yes, I have my name tattooed on my right shoulder in a cartouche.

In addition, I have A  West African Crocodile on the Small of my back. (Divine Sobek) However, Because I am a Linguist and love learning and studying Ancient Languages; I had the tattoo put in an Adinkra Symbol and the Cartouhed Hieroglyphic tattoo is above it.

I have a small black ankh in my ankle, done by stick'n'poke method. I am planning to get more Kemetic-themed tattoos in the future, but the ideas are still developing.

I have Set and Sekhmet on my right forearm: it was one of the first things I got after moving last month, both as a nod to Them as my Parents and, I believe, Their role in this transitory period of my life. Just linework, though, that flows into an ankh with flames (a nod to my tribe being the People of the Place of the Fire). They're also quite close to another tattoo I have, an abbreviated Nietzsche quote . . . the duality never ceases to amuse me.

All of my other tattoos are black-inked lineart, but I had my Parents done in red. :) Red's a bear, truthfully, but I'm so glad I had Them done that way. <3

Loving this thread, by the way!

Senebty,
Gezausenu.

Yeppers.  Shortly got the Eye of Horus tattoo on my right shoulder in honor of my Papa.  I'm also thinking of getting a Per-Ankh tattoo, and possibly my Shemsu name in a cartouch as well.  That one will probably go on one of my legs, or tattooed over my surgical scar on my back. :)
