Title: What do you wear?
Post by: Darytessekhmet on June 18, 2009, 07:31:12 am
Since I see so many religious people wear symbols of their faith (such as crosses, pentagrams, stars of david, etc.), it got me wondering what the people of KO like to wear as a symbol of their beliefs.  The first thing that comes to mind is the ankh, but I know there are so many symbols to choose from.

Would anyone like to share?

I have the jewelry I make for my line-up.  It looks mainstream, but is designed specifically for them.  I don't like to answer intrusive questions from strangers, so I keep my faith low-key in public.

I wear an ankh and a bracelet Tahai made for me. I honestly would wear a lot more because I don't care what people think of me.

I have three ankh necklaces at this point (one a gift from my brother, one a gift from two of my close friends for being in their wedding, and one I got myself (http://img.skitch.com/20090618-tq3wgrp7fuffwngyxekuuht664.jpg)  at Pride last year), and a set of hair sticks with ankhs on the end (http://www.twitpic.com/5hw33). I have another ankh necklace (http://img.skitch.com/20090618-tj9297beew8jdnaxgfeswnykd8.jpg)  that I was led to at a flea market a few years ago that broke, so I'm thinking of taking the pendant for a set of prayer beads but that project hasn't really come together yet. I used to have a pair of ankh earrings years ago (before I knew about KO) but those also broke.

Then I have a few that aren't overtly Kemetic that I made in honor of various Names. I made one in honor of Nut (http://img.skitch.com/20090618-rbepx3wrh9m9jbdkik2shm12tt.jpg), a choker of blue beads with a black bead with silver stars on it as the focus, and I wore it constantly for about a year until the line wore out. I made one in honor of Wepwawet (http://img.skitch.com/20090618-qu2jeggpwaaifbgt5f4fe5ss6q.jpg) with tiger's eye, garnet, copper, and "poetry" dog tags that say "Hard Road Free Heart" on grey thread. I made one in honor of the Bawy (http://img.skitch.com/20090618-c74s1jpqwur1pqthme8ucysghs.jpg) with red jasper, red beads, and dog tags that say "They Who Reveal Truth" on orange thread, but it broke and I'm not sure if that's because it served its purpose or because the dog tags are too heavy and I should remake it with stronger line. I made one in honor of the Eyes of Ra (http://www.twitpic.com/5hodh) a few months ago with garnet, tiger's eye, orange freshwater pearls, orange and red seed beads, and a sun pendant (which called to me during a Michaels trip for something else).

I also have a silver chalice that I wear as a symbol of my UU faith.

I wear three pieces of faith-based jewelry, alongside my usual pendants.  Near my collar, I wear a subtle ankh pendant.  Typically when at work, I try to tuck this under my shirt collar if I am able, but it's always popping out.  (I tuck not so much to hide my religion, but because I already wear two pendants outside of my shirts and I don't want to be known as "Too Much Jewelry Girl".)  I wear the ankh to remind me of my Parents, my faith, and my love for Netjer.

Beneath my shirt I wear an udjat pendant on a long chain, it hangs close to my heart.  This is 'hidden' because of my other pendants, I couldn't find a chain length that would make all four pendants look good together, and not too Mr. T.  The udjat drew the short straw to remain under the shirt because it is a bronzy color and the rest of my jewelry is silver.  I wear the udjat for protection and strength, to remind me of my Beloveds and Their influence in my life.

I also wear a bracelet which is turning out to be dedicated to the Gods of the Year.  Last year, for the Bawy, I wore this cute little two-heart bracelet and had Chococat and Badtz Maru charms on the clasps.  This year I am wearing bracelets that Menekh had made and donated to the House for fundraising.  Because I am VERY rough on bracelets, on the days that I don't feel comfortable and am afraid I'll break or lose one, I will wear a bracelet that I made in honor of Ra and Khnum.

I keep these items of jewelry on my shrine.  Every morning when I am getting ready, I stop and reflect on the Gods of the Year, my Beloveds, and my Parents as I put on my jewelry.  In the evenings, I reflect again and thank Them as I remove the items.

Em Hotep.

I don't wear much jewelry, with the exception of Temple activities where I wear things I've made associated with Djehuty, and some other pieces.

I usually wear certain things under my shirt as circumstances seem to dictate.  Throughout the Spring, I was wearing a lapis necklace that I made.   For the past few weeks, I've been wearing a Hawk's Eye scarab on a plain black linen string.  I like Him muchly.

I guess I'm just not a "man jewelry" kind of guy although I am prone to wearing more at home and I was recently given a very nice bracelet.

I have a gold cartouche ring with my shemsu name written in glyphs, but it only comes out on special occaisions.

I'm wearing one today: this ankh pendant set with carnelian. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/quantumbutterfly/3006078281/)  I have several Kemetic pendants. An Aset knot (?), standing Jackal (worn every Monday for Dad), a silver winged scarab holding up a sun with an ankh in it (pendant from Egypt), an elaborate Djehuty that comes out rarely, and a lotus with moonstone on top that Seshat loves.

Got an Udjat and an Ankh necklace. I must say I am looking forward getting my shemsu name in glyphs on a cartouche pendant and on the other side get my "goverment name" giggle.

Maybe a cartouche braclet. hmmmmmm...

I try to remember to put a necklace on when I go out, but I forget a lot. That's why I now have BCRs in my ears. No way could I remember earrings all the time.

When I do remember and I want to wear something to remind me of the Gods and more specifically of Him, I have a silver "Anubis" head that I bought to represent Wepwawet (I linked it on the forums somewhere actually)

Anything else would either annoy me (I can't even wear a watch) or be forgotten.

Em hotep, Pharess!

I tend to wear Ankhs more often than not.  My current favorite one is a reproduction of the Ankhs in the 1976 movie, "Logan's Run".  I have several other ones that I like to wear, too.

Once in a while I will wear my big Udjat... usually when I want to be sure to "see" everthing, if ya know what I mean.

I like wearing my Khepera cuff bracklet, too.  It's thick and shiny!

If going to a public ritual or magical event, I will usually wear my silver Aset horned disk (the disk is black onyx).

Senebty,

~Meza~

I've got two silver ankhs and a few other special charms that I like wearing, but I can't find the right necklace to wear them on, so I've not been wearing them at all.

That, and I go through phases in my desire to wear jewellery. Sometimes I just can't stand to have anything around my neck. I reckon I make up for it by buying jewellery for my icons. Sobek likes teh shineh green sparkly things rather a lot. XD

I wear my Shemsu-Ankh scarab generally, but if I feel it would be inappropriate to wear that for any reason, I'll either wear a small silver scarab, or a small silver ankh tucked away under my shirt - or nothing. I don't usually wear much jewelry, though - just one necklace, if that, and my claddagh ring.

Em Hotep,

I am switching between my udjat and Heru necklace and I am not hiding them. So far only one person approached me regarding the udjat and she was either a Christian fanatic or a little bit off her rocker because she said that the snake which is part of the udjat pendant would bite me. But that happened many many years ago.

I wear a silver Ankh. I've worn an Ankh for many years; since the early 1990s. For a while, I wore a piece of polished mammoth ivory I cut and polished myself. But I now wear the Ankh again. Sometimes I wear both. The ivory has a very soothing feel to it and I would usually always be rubbing it. I wear the Ankh as an amulet as well as a symbol of my faith. The ivory is an amulet also. The silver Ankh I wear feels as good to rub as the ivory, so this is a very good one. I can't describe it, but I have some pendants that just don't have a "feel" to them. This Ankh and the ivory are the two pendants I have that do. This tells me they carry a lot of power as amulets. The Ankh is nice to touch when perhaps I see something enlightening or special. It's also nice to touch to one's lips after prayer.

I think pendants/amulets have influenced human gestures of a certain type. I strongly suspect that when people talk and wish to make an emphatic point, or they get flustered or upset and they reach for the base of their throat or top of their chest and put their hand there, they're drawing on ancient genetic memory of reaching for the comfort of an amulet. So, there's something to this if I'm right.

Hotep,

I have a veritable treasure trove of amuletic jewelry that I wear constantly, generally with purpose. I guess you could say these were "symbols of my faith".

A few favorites... Some more obvious...
*a bronze Sekhmet and my Heru-wer Shen (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1544197&l=b7e4a35a0a&id=524367730) (shen by Inibmutes).

*Silver Sekhmet pendant (http://pics.livejournal.com/maainakhtsen/pic/000rzyf7); necklace and bracelet beaded by me.

Some less obvious...

*A necklace I made for Aset (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b229/maainakhtsen/jewelry/aset-necklace.jpg) at Her request and with Her help.

* An amber sun (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1786634&l=47c59927c4&id=524367730) Kind of hard to see, but the amber is set in a silver sunburst.

* a little from each column (http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b229/maainakhtsen/vanity/l_7408bf0c061514ff88ccd489fb924cc0.jpg) The silver cowrie shell/onyx/garnet necklace made by Nebnetjeruiti may not appear terribly "Kemetic" at first glance, but is something I find very protective and associate with my Mother (Sekhmet). The Ankh/Djed/Was below it is obvious.

Probably my number one favorite, is  this bloodstone scarab ring (http://pics.livejournal.com/maainakhtsen/pic/000k66xc) I set myself. Hard to see here, but the bloodstone is a nicely carved scarab (please ignore the mess in my cubicle. It's clean now!)

I could do this all day, hee. :)

I wear a silver ankh on a braided hemp fibre band, and a small silver scarab on the same, as well as a choker/necklace that Djehutymenekh made me (and I've take it off maybe five times since I got it, I swear) and the heka amulet we all made in the Days Upon the Year at last Wep Ronpet.  All except the necklace Menekh made me stay under my work shirt, but they are always with me.  Once I get my Shemsu-Ankh scarab, that will be a permanent fixture as well.

I have a few things I wear. I used to have a rather large pewter ankh pendant but I've recently retired it to my Akhu shrine because I was starting to feel uncomfortable with its size. Now I have two pendants that I switch around depending on what I feel like wearing. One is a silver "Ankh Udja Seneb" symbol that Heru-wer claimed and the other is a silver lotus fanned out that Djehuty claimed. I also have my Shemsu-Ankh scarab that I only wear once in a while because it is heavy. Then there is a necklace I made for my Akhu which consists of a silver chain holding a bunch of charms for the ones I was closest to and a star bead for all the others.

I actually have a similar pendant, but for me it's worn in honor of the Aesir and Vanir. You can see it here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/quantumbutterfly/3270142413/) along with my shemsu-ankh necklace which I failed to mention. That one is strung with white and black bone tube beads (Dad's instruction on the "pattern" were quite specific), and amber tone glass beads for Seshat. Someday, if I can find the right size, I'd like to replace them with amber.

It's always nice when a peice of jewelry has a bit of 'stealth', hee. :) I have a sterling silver charm bracelet that has a working compass hidden inside a teensy box on it! It also has a tiny tag custom engraved with words and numbers that have special meaning on it. Very powerful for me, and very very stealthy!

I have a necklace that I was very much 'nudged' into making it. It's a sterling silver dogtag with a Wepwawet standard etched on one side and an Yinepu standard etched on the other. (Both graphics being ones I drew myself.) And yeah... "dog" tag... LOL.

I wear it all the time, but often under my clothing. I also don't get out much anyways, so no one's had opportunity to see it or comment on it.

I switch between three pieces,  Ankh (http://www.beadloverscorner.com/images/P-SSAN135tn.jpg)   Falcon Head (http://egyptianmarketplace.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=597) and a silver cartouche of my birth name my mother gave me. I usually wear the falcon head. I used to wear an udjat, but as I have that forever embedded in my skin...I don't wear the necklace anymore.

I also wear an anklet I made for my father, of lapis chips, lime serpentine squares, and copper seed beads and an anklet I made for my beloveds of alternating carnelion rounds and gold beads(Sekhmet), malachite rounds and wood beads(Khnum), and lapis rounds and gold beads (Amun-Ra).

I have about three different things I were consistently. I have a gold ankh which I have had forever, and I only usually wear it when I feel dressy. I have a scarab necklace which I made to remind me of Weshem-Ib. The one I wear most often is my Djed pendant. It suits me, and usually opens the doors t much conversation.

I made myself a string of stylized beetles with silver clay that I copied from "Jewels of the Pharaohs" by Cyril Aldred. The gold necklace was from Giza.

I read that the beetle (Agrypnus Notodonta Latr.) was sacred to the Goddess Nit and I wear the necklace as both jewelry and a symbol of protection surrounding me.

I have three I'm wearing currently.  One is an ankh that has been blessed by Hemet and is silver tone on a silk cord (the edges are starting to show the copper underneath), my second one is the knot heka necklace we did at retreat (this'll be going back up to Tawy at the beginning of the Kemetic year so they can properly dispose of it), and the third one is the silver cartouche of my shemsu name done on sloppy heiroglyphics, but it looks good and is from Egypt.  The chain it's on is a repaired one from a necklace I had ages ago, but that ankh fell off at work.

These sit right above my heart(ankh), just above the ankh(heka knot), and at my throat chakra position(shemsu name).  I also have Ma'at's lapis Lazuli cabochon necklace, and a necklace that's an ankh with a citrine on it that I offered to Netjer.  They're sitting with the respective places around the room.

i've had several different Bast pendants/amulets over the years.  two have had to be retired due to wear and tear! my current one is not really Kemetic, but She liked it enough to claim it, and i think it represents Her well: it's a happy, dancing cat, done in silver from an illustration design by Edward Gorey.  i wear this every day.  i also have a tattoo of Her on my right arm.

additionally, i have a pendant of polished amber etched with an image of a jaguar, which i associate with Sekhmet and wear when i feel i need to call on Her for strength or healing.

i also wear a ring that bears a yin yang symbol because it reminds me of the balance of Ma'at.

Glad people like my dogtag, when the idea for it popped up into my head, I just knew I had to run with it! I didn't etch the pieces myself however, so I can't make more. I used one of those places which does custom laser etching/engraving on various sterling silver items for weddings, graduations, etc. I just provided them with the files for my two logo-style graphics.

where did you folks with the cartouche necklaces get them made?

I've been toying with the idea for quite a while, but was warned it might be bad form -- I can't quite remember why.  however, I've been wanting one for about a year. :)

my cartouche came from  The Pyramid Collection (http://www.pyramidcollection.com/itemdy00.asp?c=20&T1=P12712&GEN1=Egyptian&SKW=Egypt&PageNo=1&ref=sugg). There overpriced IMO but the pendant is beatiful and very detailed.

I think the "bad form" idea as I understand it is because the cartouche is reserved for royalty. However, I also understand the cartouche to be an extended shen, a symbol of divine protection and eternity. I thought it would be ok to wear as my mother gave it to me...and who better to offer such a symbol than your mother?

I wear a gold cartouche ring on my left index finger as part of my "can't leave the house without" gear.  (Other "can't leave the house without" gear: glasses, underpants)

I regularly wear a necklace given to me by Taji: Brass Bes pendant, carnelian beads. Another piece I wear more infrequently is a blue-glazed bone necklace that I picked up in Egypt that has some personal connections now.

Sometimes I wear this chunky scarab ring my mother bought for me, but it's too unwieldy for daily use.

So, there's something to this if I'm right.
Meant to reply to this earlier. I compulsively touch my ankhs and my chalice (and my Nut necklace before it broke) when I'm thinking, nervous, happy, upset, reverent. If I don't have knitting in my hands or my jewelry around my neck, my hands tend to fly around looking for something to do, even if it's just playing with my water bottle cap. I don't know if it's genetic memory, an instinct for ritual, an energetic tie to particular pieces, or years of wearing special necklaces while fidgeting, or what, but it's definitely comforting to touch them during those emotional and contemplative moments. Necklaces I don't wear often, or with symbols that aren't as significant, don't have the same draw to touch them.

I think this is also the origin of "worry beads" so common in the Middle East and Mediterranean. I also think there is something to the idea that something very dear to a person, that they wear often, becomes imbued with a tiny part of that person. I can't quite describe it, but you know when you get a feeling while handling a cherished heirloom.

Everyone has some beautiful jewelry here.

I have an ankh pendant I got years ago that I wear about 50% of the time. When I'm not wearing that, I'm wearing a Djehuty pendant that Setjat gave me. It's like a dog-tag with Djehuty engraved. I love it. I like this better than my ankh because it's like a comfort pendant. I also have scarab earrings that I wear every once and a while. They are really heavy, so that is why I don't wear them often.

Most days I wear my Shemsu-Ankh scarab (http://www.firecat.net/shefyt/beadedscarab.jpg) and a silver chain with two pendants: an ankh-djed-was and a Bast cat. But I'll occasionally wear something else--at the moment, usually my azurite necklace if I need "cooling" or my "stalking beauty (http://www.firecat.net/shefyt/stalking-beauty-necklace.jpg)" necklace if I particularly want to celebrate joy-in-life. (Actually, both of those are Bast's, but She lets me take them out of the shrine and wear them. ^_^)

When I am at work I wear semiprecious stone necklaces I have made and dedicated to my Names because they look like everyday jewellery and I dont want to draw attention to myself and invite religious inquiry.

On my down time I wear a myriad of Egyptian and Greek jewellery but they arent prodominately displayed as I got over pagans and new agers touching my pendants (especially my A'set or Hekate pendants) without permission.

I also wear my Gods of the Year bracelets everyday as each of them looks like everyday jewellery even though they have special significance for me.

I hate that... I had someone, not particularly pagan or anything, just walk up to me, grab my necklace, and say "OOH that's pretty!" I was taken aback - that's a little bit of a personal space violation in addition to being weird.

I have a medium large and rather broad silver Ankh necklace pendant with hieroglyphs on it's front. It's fastened to a black double cord.

I also have a simple black Ankh tattooed on my right wrist.
(I got that one when I decided to join this faith and became a member of the forums in November last year.)

Other than that, I have nothing, but I plan to tattoo my future Shemsu name somewhere neat and respectable, probably the nape of the neck.

i think i was partially inspired by this thread to obtain a new amulet a few days ago!  unfortunately i don't have a picture yet, but this one is of Sekhmet and is silver, about two inches tall, and has a base and can actually also stand, so She's even like a miniature statue, suitable for wearing or as part of a pocket shrine!  :)

It irriates me to no end when people do that.
What I find worse though in the pagan community is the "automatic hug". I don't know these people...and even if I did I may never hug them. I have only hugged my best friend of 6 years once....when she was getting a divorce. I'm not a touchy feely person...and it drives me crazy to have people all up in my personal bubble.

Speaking of pocket shrines... I picked up a necklace last month that is a glass vial filled with watch gears and Swarovski crystals on a black velvet ribbon (steampunk eye candy yum... :) ). This particular piece isn't Kemetic, but when I was reading your post Kathleen as quoted by Pharess just now, I thought you were saying your necklace was a pocket shrine. My vial necklace was the first thing I thought of--one could do a similar thing with small charms representative of one's Parents & Beloveds perhaps, or the Gods of the Year. I am now fascinated by this idea... :D

You know, I went to Dragon*Con 11 years ago, before I was even pagan, much less KO, and I wanted to buy a piece of Egyptian jewelry. I didn't want an ankh, because that's what all the goths were covered in, and I wanted to differentiate myself as an Egyptophile. So I bought a tiny silver udjat pendant on a chain. I still have and treasure it, especially now as a daughter of Sekhmet and knowing the full symbolism of the udjat. And this is the necklace I get the most comments about. Other netjer-related jewelry I wear:

Pewter Sekhmet and Hethert pendants (I wear these the most lately)
A silver Aset ring
A malachite scarab pendant
A Tehuti silver pendant
turquoise, lapis, and carnelian jewelry, not Kemtic in theme, but mostly worn for Mom.

Someday I will get my silver Jackal pendant to the jewelry store for repair; that pendant has a LOT of sentimental value for me as well.

Interestingly, I still don't wear ankhs, not because I don't like them, I just haven't found any that scream "wear me!"

I can't wear a lot of jewelry at work for safety and hygienic reasons. I wear my tyet knot almost every day. No one knows what it is, some people think it's a stick figure of a person.

Outside of work I sometimes wear one of my Aset pendants. The large winged one actually has a lot of detail, it's hard to see in the picture. The tall standing figure can be a tiny statue, too. The small head is Hethert (from Egypt) but I call Her Amenti.

I think that is the absolute height of rudeness. How dare ANYONE touch you or your jewelry or clothing without getting your permission!  I have been known to take a step back, and give them the most withering look I can muster whenever someone wants to touch me or something I am wearing without asking if it is ok first. I am not the least bit shy about telling them what is what. As in, "You just Do. Not. DO. That!"

Usually that breaks them of the habit fairly quickly. ;)

It's wonderful to have what you are wearing admired, but the adage, "lookie but no touchie" definitely applies!

Maybe...it's the sacred cariboo!

As for inappropriate grabby-hands: people don't tend to touch me or my stuff. I think I can definitely project a "keep 10 feet back at all times" vibe - being touched in the wrong place hurts so I unconsciously guard myself.

Title: Re: What do you wear?

I'm sure you could explain it just as well as I could, Zat :)

A tyet knot is an amulet sacred to Aset, and is sometimes called "the blood of Aset", "the girdle of Aset", or "the knot of Aset". Traditionally the amulets were made out of red stone (like carnelian, for example) and put around the necks of the dead.

One of the spells from the Book of Coming Forth By Day says: "You possess your blood, Isis, you possess your power, Isis, you possess your magic, Isis. The amulet is a protection for this Great One, which will drive off anyone who would perform a criminal act against him." The blood is a reference to the tyet knot.

I think at one point the knot was also associated with Hethert; I have another pendant from one of Hemet's Egypt auctions that has a tyet knot topped with Hethert's head.

To me the knot represents Aset's protection and Her magical abilities.

I have a small gold ankh that I wear with a Hamsa and a small Star of David. Alternatively, I alternate that with silver jewellery that includes a winged Isis with a turquoise in it and a pendant of Hekate. I also have a silver ankh and a raven pentacle. I also have a silver star of david but sometimes I wear either one of them on a bracelet as sadly at times, it is rather unsafe to identify as a Jew in Sydney. Recently there have been some anti-Israel demonstrations outside my work in the city :(

If I wish to conceal any indication of belief, I often wear two beaded necklaces made specifically for my Goddesses. People always comment on how beautiful they are but I have to stop people from touching them. It's a pet hate of mine, as well as the energy on the beads being altered.

Blessed be,
Corvina

I just bought a pendant of Aset. For Aset Luminous, I made Her a clay sculpture, and it was amazing! I still can't believe I made something that nice. It wasn't lopsided or really goofy looking. It was definitely a great statue for Aset. But then it broke. I've been so upset all week because I didn't have that to offer Aset for Aset Luminous. I wanted to buy a statue for Her, to make up for it, but I can't afford a statue, so I bought a pendant. It's very pretty, and I can feel Aset is pleased now. I've only had this pendant a very short time, but it already means a lot to me.

It has been a little frustrating that my Sekhmet Shen cannot be pried away from Her statue. I finally had an idea to string another one myself and then wrap them together for awhile so I can then wear the new one and She gets to keep Hers. So far as I can tell, this seems to be an acceptable compromise. Everybody happy! :P

Shemsu-ankh scarab is about it, though I have pimped it out to a certain degree with rough lapis lazuli.

I am not KO like I once was, I am currently a Kemetic Witch -- I wear a pentagram that I never take off (not to shower, not to sleep, it is tied off with a knot around my neck on a cord), and a Hematite necklace/bracelet (it converts between a choker and a bracelet) for my Father -- as I've had much success with Wepwawet and Hematite. I keep the necklace in a box in my shrine when I'm not wearing it.

I'm really not much of a jewelry person, to be honest.  I love to look at it, I love to make it - I have several Kemetic-type necklaces I've put together - I just don't wear them

I *do* wear my Shemsu-Ankh scarab pretty much 24/7 though.  I only take it off to shower.  I'd like to "pimp it out" but haven't decided how yet.  I love the pictures you've all posted - they're beautiful and giving me great ideas!  :)

In my view, you can never own too much bling. I love jewelry of every kind, I look at body adornment as absolutely necessary. You will NEVER see me leave the house without at least having earrings on.

Every single piece of jewelry I own, I think, is symbolic in some way or another - or I wouldn't have bought it. It can be a raw emerald pendant - but that Pendant I might have bought to signify my connection to healing with plant Netjeri, for example.  I have three Sa necklacess - Sekhmet-Amun Ra and Heka, which I wear nearly every day.

I have my Shemsu Ankh scarab that I beaded myself along with the obligatory ankh - one silver, one gold, depending on what matches the other jewelry and what I am wearing that day. Surely not all of it at once!

I have uraeus earrings, Eye of Ra earrings, Ma'at feather earrings, Nut earrings, a Heqat bracelet, Sekhmet pendants, HetHert pendants, Amun Pendants, Aset pendants, Ra pendants, etc. It just depends on what I am wearing, and again, it is so much of it integrated that people just think of it as "my style" and it gets attention, all of it positive. I haven't had any inquiries that I would consider 'negative' or rudely curious regarding my jewelry in over ten years.

The one piece of jewelry that never comes off for me - no matter what the work environment - is my nose piercing, which fo me was as a devotion to HetHert. I did it before it got uber popular for women to do so. Now that so many women also have similar nose piercings, no one even pays any attention. I tend to think, however,  that maybe of a handful of these women, outside of those who are Hindu, for example, actually did it as a religious devotion.

Other than rings and my nose pin, I can never sleep in my jewelry, though. As a child I was terrorized by the maternal side of the family about potentially wrapping my necklaces on the bedpost and inadvertantly strangling myself in my sleep. And I have lost far too many earrings in the bed clothes to ever consider sleeping with them left in.

Same here! I've only slept in necklaces that are very short, either my hematite ankh I mentioned earlier or many the many incarnations of hemp and embroidery floss camp necklaces, all too short to get stuck on the bed and strong enough I don't have to worry about breaking them during the night. The only earrings I don't take out to sleep are just simple ball studs; any of my other earrings, even the studs, are too complicated or loose to risk wearing to bed.

Unfortunately I think an older member is going to have to answer, as all I really know for sure is it's a scarab, and I have it because I'm Shemsu-Ankh! Oh, and mine is on a string :) But people pimp theirs out a lot as you might see in these threads!

On-topic: Since I last posted I've become a lot better about wearing my Wepwawet necklace. I wear him pretty much whenever I'm leaving the house, particularly if it's by myself (and not a particular type of trip with my mum). I got so distressed when I forgot to take him on my recent holiday that I found a bracelet while there that reminded me of him (still not sure what the stone is). I need my little bit of Wepwawet with me!

I also finally found a watch I can wear. It's suede on the inside, not leather or plastic, so it's soft, not abrasive or sweaty. So I wear that a lot when I go out now.

Since Wep Ronpet I also now have a vow to wear a Serqet shen every day, which I do. And I have my Shemsu-ankh scarab which I wear pretty much every waking hour :3 It's comfy. Although, for some reason, I want to eat it. I KNOW I'M WEIRD OK.

My shen, originally I had to negotiate to only wear for parts of a day, as I was still reeling after the Sekhmet baths (particularly the Sekhmet and Serqet ones) and the power of the shen was just overwhelming. Now that that's passed I wear her pretty much all day.

Like others I don't wear anything at night except rings and body piercings which can't fall out. I'm too worried about damaging them, or disturbing my sleep.

(body rings reminds me, I have two upper ear piercings, the most recent of which I got to remind me of my friend's passing. I have bought rings to replace both of them. She was also multiple, so the two rings represent each of my two friends I lost that day. Black rings with labradorite ball for one, hematite ball for the other.)

What's a Shemsu Ankh scarab?

Em hotep!

Shemsu-Ankh is a kind of membership status, signifying an additional level of commitment beyond Shemsu (follower).  At the conclusion of the Rite of Testing the Heart (Weshem-Ib) they are given a scarab as a token of that rite of passage, and a reminder of their connections and duty to fellow Shemsu.

When given, there is just a gemstone scarab flanked by a couple of golden beads on a cord, but many choose to restring their scarabs and decorate them in a personally meaningful way.

I wore mine to work openly for a while and someone asked me what the "turtle" was for :)  More often than not I wear stuff under my shirt, except at House of Netjer events or if I feel the need to make a statement.

I have my scarab, Seshat shabu, a sa necklace, and several necklaces I have made as amulets or offerings.  I also have a couple of other pendants I've bought or was given.  Usually I'll only wear one amulet at a time, sometimes two if they seem compatible.  A couple of them I almost never wear -- the necklace I made for Hethert is just so over-the-top girly that even Barbie wouldn't wear it. ;)

Hotep,

The beading I'm sure no one saw coming... :P

  OoOoo (http://pics.livejournal.com/maainakhtsen/pic/000x0wxr)

It's another necklace/bracelet set - inspired by Mr. Jackal (Wepwawet).

Chiastolite, pyrite (it always sneaks in), leopardskin jasper and copper accents. I also notice a few accidental cat hairs, because my cat is very fluffy and his hair is in everything.

While I understand the association with leopardskin jasper objectively (which is partly why it's included), chiastolite is and has always been the stone I connect most strongly with Him.  Mainly because it practically leaped off a store shelf screaming, "Get me for Wepwawet!" when I was on vacation in San Juan Capistrano last May.

In case you're wondering; yes, the crosses are a natural impression. Some people call them "fairy crosses" which I find a little extra funny Wepwawet-wise because He (and His other half) always struck me as whimsical and otherworldly in a manner reminiscent of fairies.

Anyway, that's the latest. :P

[Edit: New photo because I totally re-arranged the necklace.]

I wear almost daily a silver sun pendant with green amber at the center. For me, this is my 'religious necklace'. When I passed by the little shop in the mall that it was housed in, I immediately got 'pulled' back to look at it. The Netjeru were very adament and excited about the necklace and, even though I bought it, I feel as if it was a gift from Them. There have been so many interesting things that I have felt and learned about this necklace, as well as been told ^_^. Amber helps with asthma, which I have chronically and it also aids in some other things that I have to deal with on a fairly regular basis. One interesting thing  that a female aspect of Netjer told me was that the necklace shows that even though I bask in the moonlight (silver), I am a child of the sun (the shape and the amber). I feel closer to Them whenever I wear it or touch the necklace. I adore it so much! I honestly think that it was a gift. ^_^ Despite it not being a 'typical' Egyptian faith sign, I get that it symbolizes 'zep-tepi' for being the sun and I am very proud to wear this necklace (wearing it now as I type this!).

Score another for the amber sun! :D Zat and I were talking about amber  suns earlier in this thread.   Mine (http://www.amazon.com/Certified-Genuine-Sterling-Flaming-Pendant/dp/B0015VA8U0/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=jewelry&qid=1263144403&sr=8-9) is regular amber though, not green. I got it at PantheaCon in 2003.

I wear green stones, bloodstone and serpentine a lot for protection. I associate them both with my Mother, Sekhmet (I know, I know, "Sekhmet? Green?!" I hear you, and YES!).

I have a silver scarab ring that I wear pretty much all the time.  Even in the shower most days because I'm so used to having it on I forget it might be a good idea to remove it.  It's gotten to the point where I get neurotic if I do take it off and forget to immediately put it back on.

It came into my possession via a quasi-regular at a store I used to work at.  She had one (in a different size) and I admired it greatly.  When I asked her where she gout it, she said she'd picked it up at a flea market back when she worked with a jeweler and had been scouring the place for good finds.

She had the one I'm wearing in her pocket and left it with me until such time as I could either write her a check for it or get her the cash.  Too serendipitous for coincidence.  And so I'm here. *grin*

I have a silver necklace with an inch long ankh pendant.  I wear it so often that I don't remember that I'm wearing it, yet when I'm not wearing it I notice that for the rest of the day!

I have another necklace with that has a black lace with a half inch silver ankh, my boyfriend has it because he likes to wear it around his wrist (looped twice around) because it reminds him of me when he's at work.  I also have a silver Wadjet pendant that I wear if I want a change.  Primarily it's my larger ankh pendant.

Hotep Daryt!

I own an Udjat Eye necklace, which I acquired at a metaphysical store. I also sometimes wear a Pentacle, and though I own a Star of David because of my Jewish ancestry and heritage, I don't wear it since I don't follow Judaism.

Amber in general is supposed to aid in asthma if near the throat area specifically. For me, it comes down to individual stones. You've got to ask for their help! Some are more prone to helping than others. Amethyst and rose quartz are two others off the top of my head that help with asthma. But that's a tangent for another thread! ^_^

I have a few pieces of jewelry that I wear at different times... my Shemsu-Ankh scarab is always on, unless I'm taking a shower or sleeping. My Bast-Mut shen goes outside the house with me (I don't wear her when I'm hanging around the house because I've dropped way to much food on her, heh). I have a "smiley face" silver ankh that I used to wear out and about, before I got my shen. Now that ankh lives on my Bag of Holding, along with a Wadjet/Nekhbet pendant. (My Bag of Holding is a shoulder/satchel-type bag, which I use for school.)

I also have my Wep Ronpet knot amulet, but I can't wear it anymore because it's already starting to wear thin... so, I keep it in one of the pockets of my Bag of Holding (or my purse, when I'm not using the BoH).

Tanebet is correct :) They're done at retreat where they just get washed over your head/hair, but if you buy them to do at home (which I have recently done) they are/can be literal baths.

Some of them are extremely intense, and the two I mentioned left me feeling very sensitive and raw for a week or two afterwards, which my Serqet shen was just too much for.

Awhile back, I felt the nudge to dedicate myself to Wepwawet, more or less exclusively. (Before that I was kind of 50/50 with him and Inpw, which was reflected in my jewelry and the way I always had both represented.) I wanted something really special to kind of 'seal the deal' as it were, and after negotiating with Wepwawet about the specifics, here is the result:

Wow, that piece is beautiful, Nefersedt!

I used to have an ankh necklace that belonged to my mother, but it broke, oh I dunno...ten years ago? I have a Yinepu necklace that I wear constantly. It's pewter, about two inches long and has Him standing in profile with a scepter inside a cartouche.

I'm pretty sure my mom gave it to me, but honestly, I really don't know, I tend to think that I've always had it. If my mom did give it to me, it's at the very least, 12 years old. If I remember today, I'll take a picture of it, maybe someone else has seen it as I've never seen one like it before.

I made the black and grey semi-precious necklace as an offering to Wepwawet, The green with glass flowers was made for Bast, and the silver ankh and lotus necklace is one I never take off. :) I will wear the other necklaces from time to time if I feel I need that particular Name's strength on that day.

I'm working on some glass beading right now which may become devotional jewelery if it comes out right.

I'm glad you like it. :) My design for it is firmly based on ancient examples, whilst not actually being a copy of any one piece. It was very important for it to look the part and to have an authenticity to the design. It is made from solid 14k yellow gold. I was able to find someone via ETSY's "alchemy" system. I was actually contacted by five or six extremely talented people and it was a tough choice as to who to pick in the end. ETSY is a wonderful place to find artisans of all types.

Bast's is Amazonite, New Jade (a type of Serpentine, I believe) and glass flowers. Wepwawet's is Network Stone (a google search is yielding nothing about the stone at this point) and Onyx beads and chips.

I know that problem. I am using Picasso Marble in a necklace I'm making, and it's basically non-existent. I think it's because they are 'made up' copyrighted type names.

I wear a sterling silver ankh and a pewter Eye of Heru. I only ever take them off to shower (and they're the first thing back on after). I sleep with them on and if work forbids jewellery (my last job did) I simply tuck them under my shirt. Usually though they are left in the outside of my shirt since I tend to play with them a lot.

My first piece of Kemetic jewellery (that I remember) was an ankh I "made". It had been part of this weird necklace a friend gave me since I liked the ankh on it. It was a peace symbol in the shape of a heart with the ankh connected to the bottom. One day I felt the need to have the ankh on me (I was going to a funeral for a family friend) so I broke the ankh off, grabbed a metal file and filed the top smooth. I then attached it to the same cord that the original pendant had been on. I kept that  one until most of the silver tone had worn off and it was discoloring pretty badly. I still have it somewhere.

I bought a ring with a sun on it yesterday as a reminder and in honor of this year of Zep Tepi. I haven't worn a ring in months because of the two I wore regularly one I lost two years ago and the other is hopefully somewhere in my house but... And nothing quite felt right until I picked this one up in a pagan shop where I had just heard one of my new favorite musicians play a very small show. I have a hard time moving past mistakes and delays and get very caught up in my perceived failings/failures; and I think wearing this ring will help me remember the gift of Zep Tepi and refocus myself.

There was also a very nice ankh ring of a similar size that was quite tempting, but as I could only let myself get one ring and I already have four different ankh necklaces I decided I would wait on that one.

A little hard to see in this webcam photo (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/TheDisreputableDog/sunring-1.jpg) but it's sterling silver and has curly rays and a smiling face.

Okay, so I FINALLY got a picture of my amber sun necklace that I wear to represent my faith.   Here it is! (http://s618.photobucket.com/albums/tt268/EvolvingWolf/?action=view¤t=011-1.jpg)

For those that don't know the back story behind this, I was walking around my local mall during the beginners class and was suddenly stopped mid step and saw this necklace. I distinctly heard a collective voice say, "This is our gift to you. You may bask in the moonlight but you are a child of the sun." Turns out, this was correct! The only lunar influences in my lineup are from my Beloveds but I experience them more as the sun. My Parents are both the sun. ^_^ Anyways, I had to buy it... even though it was a 'gift'. lol It's been a pleasure wearing it since that day.

I wear my Shemsu Ankh scarab, plus my tattoos.  I recently got a lovely Bast pendant that I’ve been wearing too.  I’d like another Ankh pendant, but with the tattoo of one right there, it’s not a pressing need.

sat Bast her Hekatawy-Alexandros, meryt Serqet-Aset, Yinepu-Wepwawet, her HetHert-Sekhmet.

I currently have a Wadjet eye tattoo on my right shoulder (right facing eye for the sun) in honor of my Papa Heru-sa-Aset as well as a wadjet bracelet I got for Christmas last year.  I used to have a necklace to but unfortunately the metal was cheap and it broke.  That's pretty much all I wear though, I would wear a ring, but it's been hard to find a good one that I actually like.

Mostly I wear a necklace of Djehuty, sometime Bast. And sometimes of Khepri and Ra (they are on the same chain). I also have an ankh, a necklace of Aset.
I mostly wear them on need, since they're connected to the magical personification of the particular Netjer.

Awesome thread! Guys, do you think the necklaces should be worn outside or under the shirt? My relatives say it's a personal thing so they should be worn under.

Em hotep!

I have one favorite pendant I always wear, featuring Set and Horus, that I had laser cut years ago.  Then I will add one or two more, depending on what I'm needing.  I have a favorite Hethert pendant that gets a lot of wear, along with one of Ptah, both of which I got at Dragonscale.  There's a Ma'at pendant Bezenwepwy made that gets worn, as well as a little "NebSauAnkh" (All life and protection) amulet I had made up.

As you can see, they're on the outside of the blouse! :)
I'd say whatever makes you feel most comfortable, Gleb, as to under or over.

Neheh...

Em hotep Gleb, personally I think if you're proud of your beliefs/faith then I would wear the necklaces or whatever you have on the outside.  Unless you're in a situation where you can't be as open then yes it would make sense to wear them underneath your shirt.

I have a beautiful necklace with an ankh framed by water lilies. I also have a tiger's eye bracelet that I gave to Sekhmet and wear whenever I need Her strength.

Hello all,

I have a Yinepu pendent that was brought back for me from Egypt.  I beaded that necklace myself so I wear it often.  I also have my shabu (necklace specifically designed for Yinepu - these kind of necklaces were made about 15 years ago so some of them floating around out there are very old [like mine]). The shabu attracts just about everyone that sees it and it seems like every time I wear it someone has to come up and touch it (argh) as it has skull beads on the actual necklace.  I don't wear that one in public so much anymore as I have to 'clean' it after someone else touches it (unless they are another wabu that has been purified prior or the Nisut, it has to be cleared after it's touched by someone not in a pure state).

I also have another small silver pendent (Amun) that is beaded with antique Swartz crystals.  I have a simple silver ankh and earrings.  I have a set of  winged Aset and winged scarab earrings as well.   In regard to rings, I have a special silver scarab I wear that represents my priesthood (and the vows I took).  Before I die, I'd like to have a ring made with my priest ordination name on it.  :)

I'd like to get some more Kemetic themed colored stone jewelry in the future. Thanks everyone for sharing.

Senebty.

Not a whole lot has changed since I wrote this post! The two necklaces that I primarily wear are still my ankh and Djehuty pendants (and I am currently wearing the ankh!). However, I do have a few more additions. I have Djehuty and Geb Shen necklaces that Inibmutes made. I also have a Hethert headdress pendant and a rose quartz necklace devoted to Hethert. Lastly, I have a Geb necklace made by Tahai that I occasionally wear, but that mostly lives in my shrine.

Endy

Em hotep everyone!

I used to wear just a simple silver chain with a silver Wesir pendant on it, but I lost it during a transatlantic move.  When it came to replacing it I found it is no longer available.

Now I wear a rosary-chain style chain of Garnets (for Nit) with a side view silver pendant of Wesir. This has worked out to be my favorite necklace. I have another I made out of lapis-chain and a pewter Wesir pendant (for Nut and Wesir). And I have a Faience Djed on a turquoise chain.  But I wear the Garnet chain the most because I love it so much. One day I hope to incorporate Nut into it as well.

I also have a ring which is an arrow wrapped around the finger for Nit.

Hotep all!  *henu*

I never answered this question so here goes!  ^_^

I wear a squared cartouche necklace showing Serqet on the throne with Ma'at kneeling behind Her (the scene from Nefertari's tomb) that I purchased in Egypt.
I will also usually wear my Shemsu-Ankh scarab, and a Nebt-het necklace as well.

Sehedjef

I don't wear any general symbols as I haven't gotten any yet. I wear the Heru-wer beads that Wenunisenu made and gave away and that I felt a strong pull to/urge to get. They're discreet enough and also comforting to wear (you know how they say the gods lived/live in statues? Well, I wouldn't be surprised if Heru-wer is in the pendant for that reason).

I wear a small feather pendant and a small ankh, both on the same chain. The feather isn't in the style of the feather of Ma'at, artistically, but that's what I use it to represent. I wear them outside my clothing, both because that's just how I wear jewelry and because wearing them under makes my dysphoria worse.

Em hotep!

I wear a lot of jewelry but I also have sensory issues sometimes, so what i wear changes often! I try to always wear either my silver ankh on a silver chain or my 3 bracelet that I have dedicated to Netjer: garnet, lapis, and one I made of glass pearls and semi-precious stones with a sun charm. I have lots of lapis pieces that I love to wear in honor of Netjer, too.
I also wear a headwrap when I leave the house in honor of my Mother Sekhmet-Mut. This is in no way a requirement for anybody, but it helps me personally to remember my devotion even if I can't or don't have the energy to be in shrine. It also shields my head from other folks energy and makes me feel regal and dignified! I've been covering regularly for about a year now and it's become quite important to me. <3

Em hotep nefer, all! :)

Like Ematsen, I wear a lot of jewelry (the vast majority being silver, though I have a number of bronze and gold pieces), and what I wear depends on the day and how I'm feeling.

In the last couple months, my Babi, Yinepu, Wesir, Sobek, Taweret, and Aššur (one of these is not like the other! :P) amulets have been rotated-in to my everyday wear the most often.

Some items I wear are fairly fixed to a certain time of year. For example, my Tatenen and Nehebkau amulets -- which Bezenwepwy made for me some years ago -- come out during late November through early December, around the times of the Wesir Mysteries, Khebs-Ta Festival, and finally the Nehebkau Festival. :)
