Em hotep and welcome!

My interest in all this started when I was a kid as well, and was definitely of the "Oooh, shiny!" variety. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I hope you find what you seek here, and I look forward to chatting and such with you in the future!

The others have mostly beat me to most of what I would have said, but Set is not, in my experience, a malevolent or evil force. He is, instead, a great protector. He can be very overwhelming, an he can be intense, but he is not harmful.

As for what Set might want from you, I don't think it's possible for me to say, but you might explore that by asking him. :)

I'm not a priest and so cannot speak with a priest's authority.

For what a member's perspective is worth, however, to my knowledge, I have never seen any official position or been told, since I first showed up here in 2003, that only divined folks can have valid relationships or experiences with gods. I tend to focus on the gods of my RPD as a Shemsu, but that doesn't mean I don't honor other gods and have experiences with them as well, and I imagine that this is true of most folks.

Likewise, your experiences are yours, and they are valid. :)

Also: Em hotep, and welcome!

That's a really great prayer. :)

I don't have a specific practice for my departed pets, but I sometimes leave out offerings of things they once enjoyed...and if the current, living pets happen to come and help themselves to bite or two, well, so far there have been no objections. ;)

I get a bit fussy and fiddly with specific incenses for certain gods when I have the budget, but my long-standing everyday go-to has been Nippon Kodo's "Mainichi-Koh" (i.e., "Everyday Incense") sandalwood. It's inexpensive, avoids what we call the "poop-stick" problem at my house (i.e., some incenses are made using cow dung as a binder), and, at least in my opinion, smells quite nice. I've endeavored to keep a box around at all times for various purposes since I discovered it about 20 years ago while in Japan. It's available on Amazon and plenty of other places.

For Ra-Heruakhety, I tend toward frankincense and myrrh, but my current living situation makes burning resin using charcoal an overcomplicated pain in the rump (that's technically a lease violation), and there's also the sustainability issues others have pointed I'll keep Morning Star's take on both of those scents around if I'm feeling like I want to use them.

For Set, I've tended to use dragon's blood resin for a long time--but again, the charcoal issue, and I think there might also be sustainability concerns there, too. I think I'm gonna try giving cedar a spin at some point, based on Sedjfai's discussion of it. I wasn't aware of its association with him before, but I could certainly see it being a good, strong match.
