[PUBLIC] Kemetic Orthodox Q&A / How do I set up an akhu shrine?
« on: August 10, 2011, 12:25:41 am »
I know I'm supposed to have one, or at least it is suggested that I have one, but I don't really feel like I know much about akhu shrines. Could anyone tell me more about it? I'd like suggestions on what I should keep in the shrine, what things people do with their akhu shrine, and what to do if  you only know the names of a small amount of akhu. I don't know the names of my great grandparents for the most part, and I know very little about them. I know the few people that have passed on during my lifetime, but I know I have more akhu than them (although they, of course, are greatly valued).

As a side note, I'm getting an apartment up at school (away from home). Is it okay to have two shrines, or should I transfer my shrine items back and forth when I come home on the weekend?

Thanks :)

[PUBLIC] Kemetic Orthodox Q&A / Parents, Beloveds, and offerings
« on: July 29, 2011, 12:40:36 pm »
I haven't had my RPD, so I don't know who my parents and beloveds are yet. I was wondering, however, if I am required to provide an offering to each and every one of them at every senut, assuming that I perform senut daily.

Ex. I have seen some people with 2 parents and 3 beloveds. That would be 5 offerings. Would I want to pray to all at senut but make an offering to one, and just rotate per senut? Would I need 5 offerings every day, one for each Name?

I'm just trying to get an idea of how this works. I like to provide offerings, but I run out of ideas rather quickly so...

any help would be loved :) thanks

[PUBLIC] Kemetic Orthodox Q&A / Shrine defiled by horde of ants T.T
« on: July 07, 2011, 11:10:59 am »
So I went to sit at my shrine last night, only to find my offering bowl SMOTHERED in ants. I knew I had seen an ant or two in my room before (over the past three weeks) but my offerings has never been touched before over the few weeks I've seen the ants. I only ever usually see one or two at a time, so we've never been able to figure out where they're actually coming from.

In the process of cleaning off my shrine, I had to dump the offering in the toilet to get rid of all the ants, rip out all the pieces in my shrine (I broke the mummy part of my Yinepu statue off of its base, but it fit back in so it won't need any serious repair), and I had to throw my shrine cloth in the dirty clothes to wash out all the dead smooshed bugs.

I expect it would be bad to get bug spray on my shrine space. Any other ideas (besides simply re-cleansing the space) to keep these bugs away?

As a side note, I'll be taking my offerings off of my shrine after I finish senut just to prevent other problems.

[PUBLIC] Netjer (Our Gods & Goddesses) / Is Set prodding me?
« on: May 04, 2011, 10:57:17 pm »
Okay, so here's the situation: I really, really want to get this apartment. A lot of things have gone awry, and it has been very stressful--so I turned to Netjer. At Senut last night, I pretty much told the Names "Okay, whoever is listening, this is what is going on and this is what I need to happen. If things turn out how I need them to, then I will offer a nice alcohol, a bouquet of flowers, and a meal to you."

Within a few seconds of finishing my prayer, I heard a surprisingly loud clap of thunder (though it wasn't raining, and didn't start raining for a good while afterward). I kind of got a prodding to get a reddish or golden brown alcohol. I'm actually thinking Captain Morgan, to be honest haha. Does this sound like it may be Set? That's kind of the impression I'm getting, but it isn't exactly a clear impression.

As a side note, I don't plan on consuming the alcohol except in a very small amount. Is it okay to share the remainder of the alcohol with friends/family if it's okay with Set (or the particular God/Goddess)? Are there specific rules on how offerings have to be disposed of? I admit I am underage, but only by 1 year (I'm 20), and I don't intend on drinking more than maybe a few sips (about what you'd get at a church service, but maybe more than just the one sip). Thanks for your input :)

In my museum methods class, we have an "LCD Project". This project requires that each student create their own 12-15 slide presentation on a particular topic. Each slide has at least one cite-able picture and one to two sentences either describing the picture or providing information about the topic. The topic I chose was Ancient Egyptian amulets (and religious icons if information is scarce). I found a wonderful book on Egyptian amulets in my hometown's main library; but the project's rough draft is due next week and I won't be able to go get that particular book (except in extreme circumstance since it'd be a 4 hour total drive to acquire said book).

But I have a whole Egyptian community as friends of mine. I figure someone might know a thing or two, or at least what places would have reputable information. So my question(s) is this: Do you know anything about Egyptian amulets? What are good/reliable information sources? Any additional info is loved :)

[PUBLIC] Kemetic Orthodox Q&A / Akhu/Ancestor Veneration
« on: January 30, 2011, 06:42:39 pm »
I wasn't sure which forum to post this in, so I figured here would be the safest bet.

In any case, I have become curious about the akhu and how to contact them/interact with them. I don't really know many of my ancestors by name, or even what country they came from. I don't know the names of anyone beyond my grandparents (two who have passed on, two who have not) and no one really talks about my great-grandparents (not that we can't, but my family usually gets into the "why are you asking?") sorta situation.

So to get more to the point, there are two things I would like to know:
  • Can you establish a real relationship with your akhu even without knowing who they are by name?
  • How do I set up an akhu shrine? What are some ways I can get in touch with my akhu and develop a relationship with them?

Any information is loved, KO official stuff as well as UPG. Thanks everyone :3

[PUBLIC] Netjer (Our Gods & Goddesses) / Tem in a dream
« on: January 07, 2011, 08:03:48 pm »
I had a dream a few nights ago. Much of the dream has been forgotten, but I remember a part where I was going for a walk (maybe a walk for a cure or something, idk) and I remember that four names were going to walk with me. I don't remember exactly who the other three were, but they were all male and I think it was Ra, Heru, and someone with canine features (Wepwawet is my first guess, then either Set or Yinepu). I think it was a walk for strength, which makes sense at this point in my life. I was walking with another human, some guy I watch on Animal Planet from time to time (River Monsters Unhooked guy) but I don't think that was significant. (*getting to the point now*) What I do remember rather vividly was a point at which someone stopped and allowed me to jump in a car and follow for the rest of the walk (it was being videotaped for some documentary). Apparently Tem was going to walk with him now, but he would come as a cold, windy rain. The guy from Animal Planet pulled out an umbrella and a windbreaker jacket and I hopped in the car following. It was really windy and really cold, but the guy persisted and as he crossed the finish line, the rain stopped and there was a beautiful rainbow.

X.x sorry for length. Main question is: Does this sound like Tem actually visited me in a dream? If so, could anyone tell me about him or link me to a thread about him? I really felt like a Name was present with me in my dream. Thanks.

[PUBLIC] Kemetic Orthodox Q&A / IRC Beginner's chat question
« on: November 09, 2010, 12:58:57 pm »
I'd like to get the IRC for beginner's chat, but I can't figure out how to get it. I usually use Yahoo, MSN, Xfire, AIM, or any combination of those, but I didn't know if there was a particular program used. If there is, how do I get to it? The email sent out about it wasn't particularly clear on what program is used and how to actually access the beginner's chat.

Anyone care to explain it in more detail? I'm entirely lost.

PS: Sorry if this isn't really religious Q&A. Hopefully it's still considered on topic.

As it is confusingly explained   here, depending on how light is measured, it can be either a set of particles or a set of waves. In the same respect, there are theories in quantum physics vaguely explained here says that we take all possible routes simultaneously. So, using the same idea that nature itself has suggested, do you all believe that this is a somewhat scientific way to explain how all the creation stories can conflict and yet all be true?

The idea is that you take all routes but always end up at the same end, so it doesn't really matter how you got there. In the same way, all the creation stories result in the creation of the world.

What do you guys think about this? Make sense? Am I going in the wrong direction entirely? :)

[PUBLIC] FAQ: RPD (Rite of Parent Divination) / Parents and Beloveds

What are the difference and what are their significance? I know they are important, I just don't know why.
