Really wish I had not missed this.  Had no idea this was happening at the time.

[PUBLIC] Kemetic Orthodox Q&A / Re: Flowers for my altar
« Last post by Rev. Ma'atnofret on January 03, 2022, 06:53:11 am »
Em hotep!

Flowers were very important to the ancient Egyptians and it is a fun rabbit hole to fall into reading about it. Here are some of the flowers/plants that were native to AE.

“ Cornflowers, Daisies, Water Lily, Jasmine, Myrtle, Roses, Mandrakes, Lynchpins, Ivy, Celosia, Narcissus, Mignonettes, Poppies, Lotus, Papyrus, Amber, Pomegranate and Blackberry.”

I think in modern day you should be able to easily acquire daisies and myrtle branches. If you have local fruit trees or bushes you might be able to find blackberry flowers. Also, though not native, apples were also around in ancient Egypt.

Em hotep my friends !

I would like to make my altar again on my new appartment (i have a little place, not I really I want this place, but I have no choice), but with artificial flowers dating from the Pharaonic period...

Only, apart from the lotus flowers and papyrus, I can't really find any informations...

Do you have any ideas please ?

Thanks a lot <3

Hi Sarah!! I'm so glad you can resonate with my story too! That's wonderful that you have felt pulls to those 3 as well! I am very much looking forward to it as well and developing my practice too! I have a feeling this will be lots of fun :)

Em hotep!! I’m Sarah, and I feel like I resonate a lot with your story. I was also an Egypt-obsessed kid and now very excited to explore those roots even further. That feeling you described of connecting with the Netjer and learning that They are still worshipped is so awesome. At this point, I am excited to get to know all of the Names better. I’ve felt pulls towards Aset, Nebt-Het, and Khonsu, but I also feel like I am called to put my energy towards simply developing my general Kemetic practice right now. Very much looking forward to the beginner’s class (signed up for it at the start of December) and very excited to meet fellow seekers!

Most of what makes me pass his works by is the Victorian cultural influences. For me it's more than morals. There are attempts to say that the Egyptians thought and felt as Victorian society did about many different things or that they were primitive and their culture was flawed.

Personally I have difficulty with most of the things I have read from that time. I cannot forget things like it being popular at the time to take mummies home, take them out of their wrappings, and eat them for some health advantage.

I do not find Budge respectful of the culture.
em hotep!

From what I understand Budge's books are not entirely accurate due to bad translations. They are also influenced by Victorian morality. And lastly, he smuggled papyri by cutting them up to hide them. So these were a few points that made his work not as reliable.

Hi Brenda! That's super awesome to hear :) I personally adore Anpu/Yinepu, Nut and Set/Sutekh a lot and have already reached out to them. Though, my main goal is to get to know all of the Netjer in some shape or form! To me... it feels as if I am reaching out to legends that I previously thought were just mythos in childhood. Now to be able to commune and to be close to them it feels so amazing! I know this will be a great new chapter for the both of us! Nice to meet you too!
