Wepwawet and bells?
« on: September 11, 2010, 06:44:44 pm »
Randomly looking at pics of Wepwawet on google images, I noticed that there are a lot of pictures of statues, glyphs, and drawings of Him with a bell around His neck or in His hand. Reaching out, I feel as though He really likes bells. Does anyone also get this idea about Him and bells? Why do you think that He likes them so much? Thank you!

Can you provide any links to examples? I can't say I've ever seen any pictures of him with bells. :) I know there's that really late statue of a sitting dog at the Louvre which has a bell though and which sometimes gets identified as Wepwawet.

Well, with or without images, I can say that Dad does seem to like bells a LOT. Sleigh bells, church bells, glockenspiels, gongs... the cleareer and purer the sound, the better. :) Just my UPG of course, your mileage may vary.

Em-Hotep-Satsenu,

I too have sensed that he enjoys bells, though I do not believe he is absolutely enthralled by them. I have seen a few statues of Wepwawet where there is a collar with a bell tied around his neck, though I have never seen him depicted with such an accesory when he is in human/animal head form.

I believe he was shown with a bell around his neck in animal form because he was one of the quiet protectors of the West. Not being able to talk, the bell would be heard ringing throughout the Western cliffs as he wondered about. :)

In folk magic and various religious practices, bells are supposed to call spirits or ward off negative forces so that would make sense as Wepwawet is an Opener of the Way and a protector of that Road.

I should get Wepwawet some wind chimes. I'm sure he'd love to hear them when before I pray to him in the morning for safe travel to and from college ^.^

If you ever refind them, apart from the Greco-Roman watchdog statue at the Louvre, please PM me with the links. I'd really love to see them! (This goes for anyone actually if you happen to find one of these belled Wepwawets. :D)

I don't know about bells as that is not within my personal experience, but I do know that Wepwawet likes sistra. He had his own chantresses even and it is frustrating that I can't find a sistrum I like. >_<

This is AMAZING! A little while after posting this question, I felt (rather than heard) the vibrations of a bell in my ears.... Yesterday was rather horrid for me and I was becoming extremely overwhelmed and terrified of what I had been   experiencing  all day long when all of a sudden I felt a bell sounding. I had the sense of a stone being dropped in the water and the ripples going outward in a circle... myself being the center, the bell sound being the rock, and a protective barrier being the vibrations and rings caused by the dropped rock. Sorry if that is explained rather poorly. It was really a shocking experience and for some reason I kept thinking 'Wepwawet'. I felt a bit calmer afterward. Dad seemed to be watching from afar and smiling a little. How odd!

What a horrible experience for you, Satsenu. I used to work a lot with stones, but found I was over-sensitive to a lot of their energies, so I can really sympathise.

As for the bells - I often hear the sound of bells when I'm at my altar, (I know it should be a closed shrine, but I haven't got that far yet), where I have a tiny figure of Yinepu and a bigger drawing of Set. In European folklore bells are strongly connected with Faery, and with "between the worlds" experiences, which would probably go with Wepwawet's role as guide. (I'm currently unsure whether Who I have known as Anubis all my life is actually Wepwawet ?! He finds my confusion amusing :) ).

If Wepwawet's connection with bells does indeed have something to do with liminality and being between worlds, then I don't see why they would necessarily be any less valid for Anubis. That said, I very much believe them to be individuals, so perhaps one likes bells where the other doesn't, even if the symbolism seems appropriate. Something to think about anyways.

And of course none of this is to say there aren't other factors adding to your confusion too as there is the potentional for many. LOL! :)
