Who is this?
« on: December 26, 2010, 01:31:45 am »
I got given this statue for Christmas, and wanted to see what other people's thoughts are on 'who' it is:

Sorry the photo is a bit dark - full length
Slightly better lighting - full length
Darkish - close up of head
Better photo of closeup of head

Looks like a version of Sekhmet to me personally.

I am not that familiar with Sekhmet's iconography, but the Wadjet & Nechbet on the forhead let me think of a Name being connected with kingship, which gaves the statue a Mut-aspekt imho

Lack of sun-disk makes me think *not* Sekhmet.  Perhaps she could be Bast-Mut.

Looks like a modern interpretation of one of the lioness deities - Bast in a very solar form, or one of the royal Eye goddesses. But as it is not a traditional depiction I'd say it's up to your interpretation - Who makes the most sense to you? :)

My original instinctive reaction when I opened it up was Bast-Mut.   I was so sure that it was her that I told the girl who got it for me (who doesn't really ahve a clue about any of the Names, as she's not really into that sort of thing) that it was Bast-Mut.  But after the initial exitement wore off, I started to get a "You're not quite right, sweety".

When Satsenu made her suggestion I thought, "Hey, I can't believe I didn't think of Sekhmet!"  But then got "Nope, not Sekhmet".

The Sekhmet-Mut suggestion seemed to resonate most, with a "That's getting closer" feel to it.

Is there such a thing as Bast-Sekhmet=Mut, or similar (maybe different order)?  Because that's what I am getting most at this time, now.

Sobeq has a seriously valid point.  So many of the statues that we see produced modernly are artists interpretations.  Said artists aren't always deeply in touch with the Names, and often aren't studied in the history.

As for if there is presidence for there being Bast-Sekhmet-Mut... I have no clue, so I'll leave that question to others.

I know it's not really the most reliable source, but according to Wikipedia's Entry on Sekhmet,
Quote from: Wikipedia
First, Mut became Mut-Wadjet-Bast, then Mut-Sekhmet-Bast (Wadjet having merged into Bast)

So I am leaning towards her being Mut-Sekhmet-Bast...

She is indeed pretty! As said earlier, modern statues often are artists interpretations and therefore the statue could represent any lioness netjeret as it hasn't got any inscriptions.

I'm curious Who's gonna claim it :).

Well in that case, she is - "Bast-Sekhmet-Mut"  as that is the one that reasonates most as 'correct', although I am not sure if that combinaton in that order actually exists! *laugh*
