'Ello.
« on: January 15, 2011, 07:24:09 am »
'Ello! I'm Iceworth, from Australia. I was referred here by a daughter of Nefertem, whom I've talked to about Kemetic Orthodoxy several times before. I began to feel a pull of sorts, and some things happened, and here I am!

It's totally unexpected. I can't say I've had the presence of Names in my life since childhood, nor a fascination with Ancient Egypt - actually, I had the misfortune of watching "The Mummy" as a child and promptly decided to never visit Egypt, ever, because the scarabs scared the stuffing out of me. :P Ahh, Hollywood.

A Name has decided to make himself known in my life and it is not what I expected, not at all. (UPG follows, as I understand it.) He comes across strongly as an older brother who's very fond of his baby sister. He's been nothing but extremely patient and kind to me. He really likes it when I draw, and claimed my sketchbook. That was unexpected as well, because I don't recall reading (what little I have, I admit) that he liked art.

(This brings to mind... I've seen "UPG warning" a lot on these boards, but I never saw anything about it in the rules - I know what UPG is, and I won't hesitate in warning, but what is the word on that? Do people warn so that others know they are NOT saying that they are right and others are wrong? I hope I am not being disrespectful in asking, and that I'm not coming across as "What I read must be wrong!" when I recount my experiences. :) )

I'm really not used to being cared for and loved like this, so he keeps his distance. But I really appreciate him being here. I'm really eager to learn other people's experiences with the Names, as well - I've been babbling excitedly to my friend enough to make her ears fall off! :P

Back on the subject of UPG - if anyone is willing, and if it is alright for me to ask, I'd like to hear about people's experiences on that. I am new to this - heck, I'm new to having a god that interacts with me at all (while I grew up nonreligious, there was a definite Christian influence on my life) - so I'm afraid that I'm "doing it wrong". I'm not used to a spirituality/religion that accepts different experiences of different deities. Time to unlearn some things to make room for new knowledge, methinks!

Thank you for having me here. :)

Welcome Iceworth! I think the main thing to remember with "UPG" in the "unverified" part. There is a difference between academic sourcing, and personal gnosis. While eventually you may notice some UPG lines up with someone elses, this is not historically verified information on the gods. That doesn't make it LESS worthwhile, (in fact some people prefer UPG to historical reference, I'd think)it's just something to keep in mind. When someone says "UPG alert", that means that you likely will not be able to Google it, or go and find it in a text. You may find it a really cool thing to post here with your UPG, and find another member posting back "OH MAN! I know, me too!" or "S/He/They are like that with me as well!" (or the opposite, really) I hope that helps. And yes, we respect everyones UPG as such. It may or may not line up with YOUR personal experience, or it may. As long as it's treated with respect, that's pretty much all we ask.
:)

Welcome to interaction with Netjer, it can be an *extremely* enriching, and a wonderful learning experience. It's great to see that you that you seem to be approaching these new experiences with an open mind!

Em Hotep Iceworth.  Timu gave you a great explination about UPG, so I will just say welcome.
As for the Name that has started hanging around, do you mean he feels like an older brother to you, or that he is an older brother?  Personally, when Set comes around for me, he is like a big brother, albeit, a big bro who will play mean, but funny tricks on me :P.

Em hotep and welcome Iceworth, it's nice to meet you.  I'd be interested in Who it is you're interacting with as well.  Any ideas?  You might want to go to the "Netjer (Our Gods and Goddesses) board and ask there if you're not sure.  Someone is likely to know (through UPG, anyway) Who likes to claim sketchbooks.  :)

Em hotep and welcome, Iceworth! I hope you enjoy your time here. ^_^

Regarding UPG, there's no formal rule, but the board culture welcomes it as long as it's clearly distinguished from research-backed statements. You can slap a formal UPG warning on if you feel more comfortable with that, but most of the time you can probably just make it clear enough through context. For example, if I were to post, "To me, Bast has always been associated with velociraptors" (She isn't! but just as an example...), that's pretty clearly UPG. "I find that..." or "In my experience..." are also good markers. Coming right out and saying "Bast is the Egyptian goddess of velociraptors" would probably cause somebody to ask for sources.

As for your sketchbook, I think that the Names generally tend to appreciate creative work of any kind, as we put so much of ourselves into it. ^_^

Thank you, Timu, for explaining all that. :)

HedebBast and Sensu, it's funny HedebBast should mention that... Set is the one who claimed my sketchbook (I like to jokingly say he "stole" it - I was reading on the forums about someone whose child wanted to make offerings, and someone said that children could do drawings - Set pretty much said, "What they said! Your sketchbook, I want it!"), and he comes off very much like an older brother.

I can't say he's played any tricks on me, though. Though he certainly made one heck of an entrance, that probably counts.

Thank you, every one. :)

LOL...I was wondering if it was Set.  I find if He wants something, He tends to make it known, without a shadow of a doubt :P, at least with me anyway.
