Em hotep!

In the Memphis Creation Myth, Ptah originated the universe by conceiving it, in it's entirety, in his heart. Creation of the other deities came first followed by towns and shrines in which to worship them ( including statues to contain the ka of the deities ). Everything within the universe - including all people - was generated by Ptah announcing their names.

Personally, my favourite is the creation myth of Hermopolis ( Khmun ) - but that's my bias as a ( unofficial ) Djehuty child! :)

Here is a full-text of the Memphite Theology, Ptah's creation myth, as written in Miriam Lichtheim's Ancient Egyptian Literature:

Hotep.

Who or What exactly is Tatenen?  How is it that Ptah Tatenen creates all, is the Supreme God, but Geb becomes the Greatest God, and bestows the title of Tatenen to Heru-sa-Aset?  I'm confused about the Tatenen!  HELP!!!! (please)

Also, how does Ra fit into the Memphite Theology?

Hotep Tahai,

For quick reference you can check Hart's Dictionary of Egyptian gods here online at http://obinfonet.ro/docs/relig/egipt/egyptgods.pdf.

The several creation tales all run more or less at the same time. None of them were intended to be taken literally (at least, not like we might think of that today). Ptah Tatenen is the creator god according to the Memphite Theology (which while inscribed in the Late Period was supposedly duplicating a far more ancient text from Memphis). Geb is part of the Heliopolitan creation as told in the Pyramid Texts. (shall I even mention the Hermopolitan creation, or Khnum as creator, etc? ;)
