Distinguishing Heru from Sokar
« on: March 29, 2012, 06:52:54 am »
Em Hotep!

I'd like to make sure I am learning correctly how to distinguish forms of Heru from Sokar, when they are in their falcon-man forms.

Here is a picture of Heru  from Wepwawet Wiki.

  And here is Sokar-Wesir.

One of the main differences I am seeing is in the style of crowns They wear. How else can I learn to distinguish Them? I am looking for pictures of Sokar-Wesir online and want to make sure I get it right.

Hotep Aashemmuti! *henu*

The crown is the best way I know of to distinguish the two. Sokar wears the Atef crown (which is the same crown Wesir wears). Heru is usually seen wearing the crowns of Upper and Lower Kemet. I am not sure if Heru has other crowns )especially to distinguish from the different Heru's) but hopefully someone else here might.

Sokar is also depicted many times as mummified. Of course always check the glyphs if they are available because they will give the definite answer.

Sokar is depicted usually in mummy wraps. The image from the Wepwawet wiki may not be entirely accurate historically.

The crown also distinguishes Him from Heru (the crowns on the images you provided look correct to me); however, like Heru, He is sometimes depicted without it.

Sokar is not always depicted as mummiform.

Heru headgear typically found:

Solar Disk = Syncretic forms of Ra/Heru.

White Crown = Heru-wer

Double Crown = Heru-sa-Aset

No headgear = It's a hawk, yay. Use your imagination.

The above are good guidelines for buying statues, but they vary too. Like this and this can also happen. Herus can be complicated business. :P
