Another question (I know, I have a lot!)
« on: July 21, 2012, 09:20:03 pm »
Em hotep!
First, I'm not quite sure where this goes, so if it's the wrong spot, or if it's not appropriate, I'm sorry!

Not too long ago, (maybe ten minutes?) an aunt on my sister's side sent me a message asking me if I still am 'a follower of Jesus'. I was raised Christian, and almost my entire family is. I'm not sure why she asked me, but I know if I tell her the truth, it'll spread like wildfire throughout my family (and that cannot possibly end well...)

I'm not sure how to respond in terms of this new faith I've found (though I stopped being Christian years ago.) Any help would be appreciated. I'm still very knew to this and not sure what to say!

Thanks!

Hmmm. I'd be tempted to say "That's a rather personal question. What's your bank balance?"

Or you could just ignore it.

Maybe someone else will have some better suggestions.

The way I deal with my husbands family is brutal honesty. I probably should be more reserved with telling people what I believe, but I am not. I will say that approach is not for everyone. I will also add that while in a professional atmosphere I remain vague b/c our firm could potentially lose business if they knew about my faith.

Rayashi, I thought about that...but I have quite the family...hahaha. I'd like to be honest, though! I think I'm just scared to be! I already know I'd have people all over the country (they've spread out now..) trying to convert me.

It'd be crazy!

I kicked the door off the "broom closet" when I was in high school, and went through some years of grief and family drama, but it's amazing how quickly it can end. But I also made it clear that I'd cut off anyone that pestered me about religion for good.

We all have our ways of dealing with it. I will say, your aunt was being rude, and that might be enough to say. Just tell them you don't think it proper to speak to them about it.

You aren't obligated to tell them anything about your soul.

I would generally agree that you do not HAVE to tell them anything. Some families would not react well to such news, and you need to figure out what would be best for you first as well.

(In my own case I've been not-Christian for two decades, had a period of seeking and eventually morphed into a syncretic polytheist. My family knows my spiritual leanings in general but specific details would not have much bearing for them.)

I always say this: "I see Jesus as a teacher, but his path wasn't right for me, although I respect those that do follow him. The religion I am a part of (or exploring) now encompasses all teachings." To those I trust I then will go into the Kemetic explanation, but most people tend to be fine with that. If people ask questions, I just smile and change the subject.
