From a more personal perspective, I've had one fairly significant experience with Aten.

I generally see the sun as Ra and only Ra. On a particularly clear, sunny day when I was walking outside, I was struck but the absolute brilliance of the sun. As I squinted I could see rays from the light filtering through my eyelashes. I was immediately reminded of the image of the Aten as a sundisk with many hands, reaching out and touching everything. It was the first time I'd seen the Aten as the sun, and it was really stunning.

The Chicago House article gives a rich insight into the mechanics of the reign of Amenhotep III, and I have always felt that it is here we would find valuable information about what truly occured when Akhenaton became king. (I did not know, for example, that the former became deified in his lifetime).

I will set upon the other article this weekend, and hopefully there will be more answers to the Ra / Aton enigma there.
