Book of the Coming Forth...
« on: February 01, 2014, 06:52:25 pm »
Em Hotep!

I have a copy of Budge's translation of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, but have heard from many that this is a poor translation. Does anyone have a recommendation of a better translation?

I love it, it's so nice and well written, I definitely suggest it.

I recommend the translation by Faulkner. :)

I have the same translation, but I wouldn't call it "poor". The point was he did the translation and interpretation a bit too much with christian lore in his mind. As long as one is able to see over his statements of budge and doesn't follow every single word but ones own thoughts and mind, I say it's as good as most others for reading and learning.

Like Caitlin, I have that same used copy. It's gorgeous, and I quite like the material of the pages. That said, you want to avoid Budge wherever possible. I also suggest Faulkner's version.

I like Faulkner's translation, myself.

Haha, Caitlin, I totally have the same copy as you, except mine has a couple of puppy chew marks on a corner.

Em Hotep,

No, its not "crap" per se, but do keep in mind that Budge's version does have a Christian skew on many of the Names of Netjer, and other versions have far more accurate translations than Budge's work.

It is good as a stepping stone to see the progression of the translations at least. It also gives you a very basic understanding of the myths, which are elaborated further in Faulkner's version.

Hope this helps,

Senebty!

To put it one way, Budge is antiquated.  I agree with the Faulkner suggestion.

Ok guys, help me out. I got two options to buy.

  This one or   the other?

The other fancy copies shown here are out of reach for me without a creditcard. ^^

I have the second one, it's very nice! I also have the fancy one, scarab and all, but this paperback version is almost as good. Just not as fancy. :-)

If you prefer a German version I would suggest Hornung's "Das Totenbuch der Ägypter"
Tanebetheru "Heru's Lordship"
