Wadjet and Bast or lion head goddes with a cobra
« on: January 03, 2015, 11:26:34 pm »
I feel like I read somewhere that there was a Wadjet and Bast synchronization. Does this sound right or familiar to anyone else?

I was looking at a lioness head goddess with a single cobra on the head but no solar disk. I want to say Bast but that doesn't feel right either. But then again I swear I've seen Bast portrayed that way a couple times somewhere unless it was Sekhmet mislabeled?

Em Hotep,

Wadjet is also identified as a Lion-headed goddess in Her own right, although usually when in this form She wears an Atef crown, however she has also been depicted also as having a rising cobra on her head with no sun disc.

Through her associations as a protector of Kemet, she became closely associated with Bast in lower Kemet who also held the same role for the area.

It's possible the statue is one of Wadjet. I have statues of her, where she's lion-headed rather than being a cobra.

Here's another nifty picture of Her :)

Hope this helps :)

All eye goddesses seem to have both the cobra form and lioness forms in common.
There is a Wadjet-Bast/Bast-Wadjet. There are many other syncs of other eye goddesses as well.

That statue looks like it has a smaller ring of Cobras (uraeus modii) and a large cobra. It could be Bast-Mut or Sekhmet-Mut as well. ^.^

If I'm not mistaken, when the Eye of Ra returns to Her father, Ra places Her in a position of honor as the uraeus upon His brow. Hence the connection of cobras and lionesses?
The only specific feline Goddess I can find associated with Wadjet is Menhyt.

That statue pic was a museum one. If seen a very similar statue custom made a few times but of course I can't find the where now :\.

So basically the statue could be a large variety of eye goddesses and syncs. That makes sense in an odd way. Mostly why it doesn't quite look/seem to be quite Bast or Sekhment or Mut alone to me. I don't have alot of Wadjet knowledge except what I found looking up the potentials of this statue.

Something like this on the statue.

I just noticed on this page - http://www.joanannlansberry.com/fotoart/met-muzm/wadjet.html - where that particular statue is at the bottom, it says that the statue was dedicated to Wadjet by a man named Minartesu. So even though it looks kinda like Sekhmet-Mut, it was definitely labeled as Wadjet.
