I know exactly what they were thinking

"OMG WHAT DID I DO I AM GOING TO GET IN SO MUCH TROUBLE... I need to cover my butt!!! GRAB THE GLUE"

instead of the perspective someone who actually loves and cares for these artifacts SHOULD have, which is

"Oh god. We need to fix this. I need to own up to what happened so this can be handled properly less a timeless relic be damaged any further"

This news really made me cringe (especially since I've worked in museum conservation). I only hope that the damage will be able to be repaired.

I remember reading that when King Tutankhamen's treasures toured the world during the 1970's, the gold on the famous mask got slightly scratched when it was dusted. It had been so perfectly polished in antiquity, that even the softest modern cloth left marks!

Reading the different articles about this, it seems like a massive overreaction based on a single, unverified report.  The beard has always been a separate piece and has been attached by epoxy in the museum since 1941 and it has been regularly reapplied with the latest materials since then.  The epoxy used is UNESCO-approved and the likely scenario is that the latest application is just a little too visible.  I'm reserving my outrage until I see it for myself.

I hate to say, but some people who are there in Egypt took a look-see and confirmed, this did happen. (As reported on one of the FB Egyptological groups.)  Let's hope the repair won't be too difficult.
