Struggling with some translations
« on: January 15, 2015, 08:41:36 am »
Em Hotep

Working on a version of the 42 Purifications and the word is 'Khemi', is mentioned to be word for 'over-thrower' but I wanted to check myself, I can not find anything concrete, the closest transliteration I can find is 'xmy' which means 'sandfly'

Any help will be must appreciated

Em Hotep,

I am using Budge's translation, but I know his words are sometimes wrong, so I have been double checking them against Mark Vygus Dictionary and where the word for overthrow is "skhr"

http://www.sacred-texts.com/egy/efl/efl06.htm this is the translation I am using

I'm not clear -- what exactly are you working on?

Em Hotep,

I am wanting a copy of the 42 Purifications for my personal practice and was checking to see if Budge translated the names on the right lines. I found that Khemi which he has put as Overthrower, doesn;t translate well into the dictionary I looked in, it says that 'xmy' means sandfly. I am checking on here to see if I am right or just missing something

See if you can get the glyphs.  That makes a world of difference.

Em Hotep,

I don't have the money to buy books unfortunately, so my studies are completely internet based. I will have to start saving money. Thank you for trying though.

Hemet's translation of the Purifications is available here - http://www.kemetschool.org/pubs/book1.php

In the meantime, I pulled out my copy to see what/who is Khemi. Unfortunately, my booklet does not match up exactly to the list on that link you gave. The closest thing I see (in my copy) is Purification 24 - "Hail Overthrower, coming forth from Qis, I do not lead myself astray." Hemet doesn't give the word for Overthrower but says that it is talking about Heru-Wer.

I know that problem, I'm living entirely too far away from the closest University with an Egyptology department right now... But the number of useful online ressources is growing daily!

I checked the Erman/Grapow "Wöterbuch der ägyptischen Sprache http://www.egyptology.ru/lang.htm#Woerterbuch
This is one of the classics, I'm so delighted I found it online, but unfortunately the translations are handwritten in German.

On page 281 I find the word xmy 'to throw over, to attack', written with these hieroglyphs:
Aa1 'x'; G17 'm'; O37 falling wall; D40 hand holding a stick
Since we can easily turn this into a noun, the word xmy "Overthrower" can be confirmed.
(see the Gardiner sign list for glyph codes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardiner%27s_sign_list)

Another interesting candidate is the word before that, page 280, it's also xmy, written like this:
R22 'xm'; Aa1 'x'; M17 'i'; M17 'i'; A40 sitting god
The translation, though given with a question mark, is 'He of Letopolis' i.e. the local god of Letopolis. Letopolis is 'xm': R22 xm, Aa1 x; G17 m; O49 town; Assuming that 'xmy' with a god determinative sign is "God of Letopolis" sounds logical to me.
The God of Letopolis is Khenty-Irty, here's a very nice essay about him:
