I only feel devotion towards Ra. Is this normal?
« on: December 11, 2014, 05:32:40 am »
Em Hotep, everyone.

As the title says, I've been thinking about this a lot recently, and I've realised that although I deeply respect and really enjoy learning about the other Kemetic Gods, I only seem to feel any sense of religious devotion towards Ra.
I respect and care about the other Gods too, but Ra is the only one I feel compelled to pray to, or make offerings to, or anything of the sort.

I suppose it comes from the fact that before I joined Kemetism, I was a sun-worshipper. It's also because everything since I joined, including the dream that first convinced me to join, has focused entirely on Ra. He's also the only God who gives me a great feeling of joy whenever I say or hear His name.

I was wondering if this kind of henotheism was common or heard of in Kemetism? I'm a long way off undertaking my RPD, so I have no idea if Ra is my parent or not, but I still only feel this sense of devotion towards Him. Is this something that happens often in KO?

Is it normal? Yes. However, there's no real right or wrong answer for the rest.

Some people feel a strong connection to one particular Netjeru months before their RPD, and some don't. Sometimes that Netjeru turns out to be their Parent or Beloved, and sometimes They don't even appear.

As it got closer to my RPD, I began to feel a connection to Bast and Yinepu. I'd also had dreams about Them, and one of my dreams featured Sekhmet and Heru-sa-Aset together. I tried not to focus on Them because I knew that I would feel slightly disappointed if They didn't turn up, but I still honoured Them with the other Netjer as a whole. As it turned out, Bast and Wepwawet-Yinepu are my Parents and Sekhmet-Hethert and Heru-sa-Aset are my Beloveds. So I was almost right ;)

If you feel that you're drawn and connected to Ra then feel free to honour Him. It could be that He is taking a particular interest in your life right now, or it could be that He is a possible Parent or Beloved. It's hard to say for sure. Just take it as it comes.

Senebty.

So you're a specialist :) As long as the more general basic learning can get through if you decide to take the next beginner's class I don't think it's an issue.

Good for you on your current clarity even!

I've already signed up for the next beginner class :) I've also spent a lot of my time in the meantime doing as much research as I can, especially focusing on Ra.

Just remember that when your class starts, it is asked of you to try and focus on Netjer as a whole than on one specific deity during Senut.

I was initially brought here by Sobek-Ra, I gave us space (while still occasionally giving him his out offerings out of Senut) and when I was finally ready, took the RPD and he is my sole Parent. (:

I've seen it where the gods people were convinced was their Parents were really just bringing them to KO in the first place. It's not too uncommon.

When I joined the only specific Name I prayed to a felt devotion to was Bast. Eventually Sekhmet nudged me and I didn't find a connection towards Wepwawet until right before my RPD.

Ra may end up your parent or a beloved or just a Name you feel particularly devoted towards.

What alot of people seem to do during their beginner class is set aside focus on one Name so they can be more open to all of them. I'd advise for you to do what feels right. When the time comes for class and RPD and any other ritual you'll know what you should do. If not then look for advise like you did here :)

Hotep, Abigail.

Just want to throw out there that RPD is not a requirement.  You can be a friend of the House of Netjer (Remetj), and never undergo RPD.  Some of our best scholars are people like this.

If you want to be a Shemsu, then RPD is a must.  They'll go over all of this when you take the Beginner's class.

In the meantime, don't worry about it too much.  One of the things Sobek-Ra taught me when I was worrying about my RPD was that 'All things are connected through Ra.' And in my line-up, they assuredly are:  2 eyes of Ra, the Vizier of Ra, and a sync with Ra.

Blessings,
Tahai.

Many people go through periods of worshiping one Name solely, some worship many, some go through cycles of a few or several gods.

Whatever works for each person is correct.

I was brought to the House by Hethert, and divined as Her daughter, and for a while, She was Everything. Then I had a period of equal time given to Hethert and Set. Currently, most of my intense shrine time is given to Khonsu and I've recently found praying to Amun to be beneficial.

They tend to steer you where you need to be, if you listen, and sometimes, even if you don't. xD

Em Hotep,
I was the same way lover of the sun nothing but Rah and the energy that created Rah.  Coming to K.O. I finally found Netjer and now everything is Netjer and all the Gods and Goddesses my RPD is way off also.  I can't wait to make a break through but my mind can't function at this moment with out all of them I love them all uniquely designed by Netjer to help us through our daily lives.
