Sekhmet and Bast
« on: March 15, 2015, 06:14:45 pm »
I don't think I've ever really understood this. Are Sekhmet and Bast the same, as in, they are different aspects (syncretized?) and make a composite, or are They totally separate from each other? I've heard both, and I'm very curious. I have been very close to Bast for some time, but have never felt Sekhmet, which leads me to believe that they are separate, distinct aspects of Netjer.

Any insight would be helpful :)

They're not aspects of each other (the way Hethert and Sekhmet are) and they're very rarely syncretized (the only example I can think of right now is Sekhmet-Bast-Ra). They occasionally take each other's place (sometimes Sekhmet is the mother of Nefertem, and sometimes it's Bast), but in my experience they're pretty separate.

Hope this helps!

I think some of the confusion comes from Bast's earlier representations as a lioness, and that They are both solar-related and daughters of Ra.
Bast and Sekhmet have been paired together since ancient times, One as Protector of the South and One as Protector of the North. A Late Period phrase about Bast being peaceful and Sekhmet being fierce tends to get parroted around the internet as Them representing the beneficial/harsh sides of the sun, making Them sound like sisters or aspected.
Isn't Het-hert referred to as the "Northern Bast" sometimes? (or do I have it backwards)

Bast is actually the northern Hethert (but you were close ^_^ ).

Also, seems to me that less-reputable sources (ie. stuff you find on walden books or barnes and noble discount racks... >.>) synchronized and/or sisterfied them. Seems I have an embarrassing amount of misguided artwork surrounding said misconception (Hey they're both cats so....!!).

Bast is actually the northern Hethert (but you were close ^_^ ).

That is really interesting, how have I not heard it before. -goes to research-

I believe there is also a Sekhmet-Bast-Mut referenced on the walls at Edfu. But normally, pretty much separate, not  synchretized. :)
