Where oh where to put my shrine?
« on: June 01, 2016, 06:29:42 pm »
Shame on me, I've just gotten done with the Beginner's Class and still no shrine.

I have two options on where to put it. Option one is my bedroom closet. There is no room anywhere else in my bedroom for the shrine and for prostrating except in and in front of my closet. Cons to this, my two snakes, lizard, fish, roaches, and dog are in my room. I'm not sure I want the Netjer to see the mess.

Option two is to put the shrine in the guest room. It's cleaner and quieter but it also feels less personal? And then it would probably have to be moved or covered on the rare occasion we have guests over.

Which would you choose to do?

Em hotep Hails

Personally, I'd put it in the guest room if I had your clutter.  You might have to move it if a guest comes over but doing Senut or any offering ritual is going to be a pain if your room is cramped and will get you out of the spirit of the ritual if it's that way.

If you have any place in your guest room where you can store the object without them being seen, like using a desk and storing the necessary things in the drawers, it might take some of the stress out of having it in the guest room.

Hope this helps.  Senebty

Second vote  for guest room, especially if you do not have anyone else in the house who will object or disturb it.

Guest room sounds like a reasonable option.

i'd say put it where you're going to use it. when mine was in a mostly-unused closet, i almost never went in there; now that it's in my bedroom, it's not the neatest space that has ever held a shrine, but i spend more time with the gods than before.

I also second ubenetsenu. I also have a spare room that I could theoretically put my shrine in, but honestly, I keep the door closed so much that it wouldn't feel right to me. So I keep my shrine in the other part of my apartment (the spare room is the only "room" with a door, minus the bathroom--the rest is set up studio-style)--and while it's "high traffic" (i.e. a puppy!) it's also a place where I can't avoid seeing the Gods, and I feel more invited to spend time with Them than if my shrine were somewhere I wouldn't see it from wherever I'm at.

Honestly, I don't see why you can't try both. :) See if one area works better for you.

I would say to use the place that is the least likely to be disturbed with non shrine activity.

Setup your shrine where is most comfortable to you. If it is not comfortable, it can not work for you.

Em hotep!

I have a "relaxed atropaic" (protective)  shrine in the bedroom (not Kemetic, but a reclining Set statue is part of it, on 'guard' duty so to speak), and the serious shrine (one level for spiritual parents, one level for beloveds, and soon to be off wing for Wepwawet), at which I do Senut and/or a simple offering in the library.  The presence of the shrine in the guest room may encourage more visits there (for a simple 'dua'), and keeps it away from the mundane activities of the bedroom.

I hope all of our various perspectives help!
