Ocean and sharks
« on: February 26, 2017, 07:01:52 pm »
Em hotep, everyone.

So, I'm autistic and one of my biggest special interests is sharks (specifically whale sharks) and I was trying to think of any Netjeru who could be associated with them. I'm drawing a blank though.

Are there any Netjeru associated with the sea? And if there aren't, are there any that you personally associate with sharks or other sea creatures (for UPG)?

Thank you!

Hatmehyt (may be misspelled) is associated with a fish. Most gods I know off do not have ocean associations.

However you could look at gods with associations with the Nun. Which is a large primordial expanse of water.

Em hotep TheHandMaiden,

I don't have anything Kemetic to add, but want to mention that I, too, have an intense obsession and love for sharks.  I live on an island surrounded by reefs, so one of my meditations involves going out after sunset to watch the blacktip pups feeding.

Heh, I can appreciate that I'm not the only shark lover floating around here.

But whale sharks are the light of my life <3

Wadj-Wer ("Great Green") is associated with the sea, and/or lakes in the Delta region. He's depicted similarly to Hapi, and has a repeating wave pattern on his skin. He's not a very well known Netjer, but I have a fondness for him.

Em hotep! While it's not a strictly Kemetic association, Aset did take on a maritime association under the Ptolomies with the influence of Greek culture. One of Her biggest festivals after Her worship had spread out of Egypt into the Roman empire was the Navigium Isidis, which was closely associated with the sea and sailing. Not exactly a tie to sharks, though.

I'm not any type of Egypt expert, but I seem to recall the following.

Kemet was a river based society.  They weren't seafarers and the Sea was kinda the place badness came from.  So they didn't really have any sea or salt water gods. Plus there are no whale sharks in the Mediterranean.

Nevertheless Set was considered to be over foreigners, so that might be your best bet.  Besides I could see Him liking sharks.

Senebty,

Taji

PS: I feel the most spiritual by the Sea, so I find Kemet's lack of sea gods rather a bummer.  But I have taken to chattering at LaSiren (not a god.  Kind of a big netjeri from the Caribbean) every week.  We'll see how that pans out.

Taji said what I had intended to post here. That said, when I was younger my life's dream was to be a marine biologist and I could have easily seen myself specializing in sharks.

Oh man. I wanted to be a marine biologist SO HARD for most of my life. There's a lot of math, though, and my illneses aren't conducive to...anything, really, but especially things like diving, so it didn't pan out. :/ I still love me some ocean, though. Whales, sharks, cephalopods, the deepest deeps... There was an online shark education course I wanted to do last summer, but of course I forgot. >_<

I'm in kind of the same boat (ha!) as Taji, where I have an intense affinity for the sea more than fresh water, but there aren't a lot of Kemetic associations to work with. Different past life, maybe. For me, the idea of the Nun has worked to fill some of the missing space there. The waters of creation, and whatnot. And Ra and Wesir (Sokar-Wesir, in my case) are both Boat Riders and I was given a specific message with regards to me, Them, and water in general that was incredibly beautiful and comforting, so...

Tangent: Anyone else watch the Nautilus Live expedition streams? (Or Okeanos?) If you're not and you're an ocean person, you should definitely check it out when they set out again! They broadcast the feeds from their deep sea ROV cams and you can send in questions and comments. It's great. =D
