Liminal Netjeru
« on: October 08, 2018, 08:58:32 pm »
Em hotep!

I was wondering which Netjeru people think of as liminal deities. Names like Wepwawet and our many psychopomps (Anup, Hethert, etc.) come to mind for me. Am I missing anyone? Who's your favorite liminal Netjeru?

Em hotep,
Nebt-het can be seen as a liminal goddess, even though it is not something explicit in kemet, but the greeks would call her 'end' as the end before the beginning.

I've been thinking lately about crossroads deities, and wondering if KO has any.

The Ogdoad could be seen as liminal. They exist both before and after creation.

I don't know if KO has a "Netjer of the Crossroads" the way some traditions do, but I would look to Wepwawet, as Opener of the Way, for crossroads work.

As for liminal Netjer, Set fits as well--not as a psychopomp, but as a Name associated with edges and "outsiders" and places Not Here.

I have 'Lady of the Borders of Places' on my list of Sekhmet epithets. Not sure the original source for it, though I'm pretty sure I got it from the LAGG. It's probably more in the sense of protecting the borders, but it still feels very liminal to me.

And as Neshnyt says, very much Set. I have very liminal Parents.  :P

Nebt-het definitely feels liminal to me, too. As does Wepwawet.

Em hotep, friends!

I also think of Papa Set as being very liminal--as He appears to me, boundaries aren't really a thing for Him; He's transformative, a Wild Man; He represents things to me which there's no boundary against (or at least, nothing but self-created ones--and it pleases Him to tear those down).

I also see dearest Ptah as being extremely liminal. He's, well, BIG. Very vast and ancient; Ptah's almost beyond reckoning to me . . . He seems even bigger to me than the divide between the seen and unseen, here and the Duat, and yet He's very present. He's Elsewhere (the beginning of creation) and Here (and now) simultaneously and pervasively, inextricably.

So well said, Gezausenu!

Yes, I see Set that way, and Ptah-Sokar-Wesir that way too.  "Elsewhere" and "Here", too.  Ptah seems almost alien, so Very ancient, and so very Aware.  Dua Set!  Dua Ptah-Sokar-Wesir!

This is mainly UPG, but I see Wenut as liminal, a messenger moving in the twilight between the Seen world and the Duat. More traditionally, in ancient Kemet She was called upon in at least one birth spell to help the child come forth, so you have an in-between space right there.

Aset, Nebet Het, Nut and Hethert are liminal deities and psychopomps as they all  are the Ladies of the West/Afterlife/Amenti goddesses.  Aset and Nebet Het together help the sun rise and set which is a very liminal time.

I'd also include Wepwawet and Yinepu as well for their liminal roles.
