Khepri and sun gods
« on: December 15, 2018, 12:56:13 am »
I’m trying to remember a quote or saying “Ra is Khepri in the morning, x at noon and y in the evening” I can’t remember who the other two netjeru in this are. But it’s specific.

The rising sun is Khepri/Khepera, noon sun is Ra, and the setting sun is Atum :)

I've always heard differently: Khepera is the rising sun, Amon is is Noon and Ra is the setting sun.  And Atum is the solar disk itself.

That is interesting that you have heard that, Guga! Where did you come across that? Amun is "The Hidden One" and therefore it doesn't make much sense for Him to be the noon-sun. Amun-Ra can be, though. However I have mostly read of Ra or Raheruakhety being the noon sun.

Atum is normally referred to as the evening sun or night sun. I have also read of Wesir being the night sun as it passes through the Duat.

I have read about these references in a few books and sources, but the most recent one I have read that sticks out in my mind (and therefore can find quickly) is from "Myth and Symbol in Ancient Egypt" by R. T. Rundle Clark. Here is the excerpt:
"Atum is the aboriginal deity and ultimate but hidden godhead; Khoprer is God as he appears in visible form, whether at the beginning or every day; Re is God now in the sky. Atum is essentially invisible, so he later becomes the night sun as it journeys through the underworld or the arbiter of destiny perched on top of the world pole."

Is Atum getting confused with Aten?

Aten is the sun disk.

Very similar names.
