2019 — Carrying Ma’at Forward
« on: December 24, 2018, 11:01:11 pm »
As we approach the new year, I thought we might reflect on upcoming volunteer opportunities that we are considering, or perhaps already planning, to participate in for our local communities.

I’ve recently been asked to serve as a regional alumni representative for my undergraduate institution, and am looking forward to supporting current students and alumni with their career efforts!

How about you? What possibilities exist in your community to carry Ma’at into the world?

Wow. Congratulations on your selection to be alumni representative!

I am continuing my efforts through my business to assist people who may have a need but don't have funds for my products.

I realize that's not really volunteering, but it is one way that I can reach out and assist others.

Em hotep!

For myself, my goal for the year is to set up yoga classes at one or more of our local dog shelters. The idea is that it does us as people some good to be around animals, as well as get those animals some love and attention. The ultimate goal is to help connect future owners with their future pets, and all proceeds from the classes will go to helping cover some of the shelter costs.

Thank you for sharing this, Lauren. That sounds really awesome, and you're helping more than one species at the same time :)

Thank you! I was a bit hesitant to share, as it's a plan that's only in its infancy, but it's one very dear to my heart.

It is absolutely a wonderful act of Ma’at that shows generosity and kindness! And sometimes for wonderful things to continue, a cost is necessary. So official volunteering or no, this a fantastic project for those who need assistance. Thank you for sharing, and please let me know if there is anything I can do to support your efforts!

Cool stuff! I really like you ideas!

I did a charity thing on the solstice. The budget that usually goes into Christmas presents was donated to the Cairo Cycling Geckos:

I love this initiative. They promote women's rights, they promote cycling for health and environmental benefits, and  they help poor people and refugees - all in one project!

Em hotep!

Thus far, I have decided to sponsor a child in Egypt. It is a commitment that I have made until he comes of age and achieves his dream of being an accountant. :)

The second task that is in the works, is to shadow an embalmer to test my mettle. If I am able to handle it, then I plan on possibly pursuing funerary work in honor of Anpu, who led me to Kemetic Orthodoxy in the first place.

In addition, or if unable to do funerary work, then I plan on volunteering at a cemetery.

It isn't a whole lot, but every little drop makes an ocean as they say. :) I love reading everyone's ideas and plans. It makes me feel so good to know such awesome humans.

I can't do much myself for various health and financial reasons, but I have been supporting my husband in his charity endeavours. He started sponsoring a little girl in Somalia last year and I hope to be able to craft some things to send to her family. He's also getting more involved in his church and I encourage him in that (buying mince pies for local children, clearing the graveyard etc)
