Moon Associations for Bast
« on: January 13, 2019, 06:41:21 pm »
Em hotep, everyone.

So, in some weird tumblr discourse a while ago, someone (who was not a Kemetic polytheist) claimed that Bast is a moon deity. Logically, I know that it's very unlikely and was probably just something they made up for discourse points or whatever such nonsense, but does She actually have any direct connection to the moon? I know that She was associated with Artemis a lot by the Greeks, but does that have any basis in Kemetic texts?

Thank you!

Em hotep Biwimuti,

As far as I know, all conections of Bast to the Moon is because of the greco-roman syncretism with Artemis, but if someone knows some kemetic source I'm also interested

Yep. So far as I know, it’s Ptolemaic and based on the association with Artemis. It used to kinda annoy me.  Now I kinda get it.  But not in a way I can readily put into words.

Ptolemaic associations for the Names just completely bemuse me, and I tend to avoid them for a lot of reasons. The weird associations with Hera made me absolutely terrified of Aset for years, and I'm still not as comfortable as I should be with Her considering She's one of my Mothers.

In terms of Bast, I always associated Her with the sun because of Her being an Eye of Ra? That might not be as common of an interpretation as I assumed it was.

It is because of the Greco-Roman association of her with Artemis.  http://www.per-bast.org/bast/essay10.html

I think most of us would agree that Bast is very solar/flame oriented. ^_^

(I wonder if the Greeks perceived Her differently because by that late period, She was more often associated with cats, whereas She originated as a lion.)
