Heru-Sepa, Son of Sekhmet
« on: March 28, 2020, 04:48:50 pm »
Em hotep all,

I have been trying to look into Heru-Sepa recently, but am struggling to find much on Him. I know that Sepa is a god who was called upon for protection from poisons, insect and snake bites, and illness, and that He can be depicted as a centipede, a mummified man with small curled "horns", or as a donkey. I found a couple places so far where He is mentioned, either as Heru-Sepa or just Sepa. IF anyone knows anything about Him, please let me know! IDK why I feel so pulled to Him yet but I am determined to figure it out.

This is what I have found on Sepa so far:

Sepa references in a purification by a sem-priest in the tomb of Sennefer (https://www.osirisnet.net/tombes/nobles/sennefer/e_sennefer_08.htm)

This UPG of Sepa (http://unorthodoxcreativity.com/emky/info/sepa-centipede-god/)

A mention of Heru-Sepa in this forum post, "Many, many Netjeru deal with illness, whether of the "demonic" variety or the purely physical variety. (Heru-)Sepa, Aset, various Hathor-Goddesses, Bawy/Harwyfy/Set-Heru, (Heru-)Shed, Sobek (esp. Sobek-Re of Sumenu), Amun-Re . . . you name it!" (quote by Sedjfai)  (https://www.netjer.org/forums/index.php?topic=21303.msg299799#msg299799)

A mention of Sepa in this forum post, also by Sedjfai (https://www.netjer.org/forums/index.php?topic=21121.msg297043#msg297043)

Sepa has been linked with the gods of On, which include Heru and Wesir. He can be synchronized with both. I believe there is a coffin text which calls on him to protect the dead within the coffin.

Em hotep nefer, Mehuti!

The syncretism of Heru and Sepa as a son of Sekhmet occurs on the festival calendar of Edfu Temple (specifically, for 28th of Peret IV). There's not a great deal of cultic information on this particular syncretism, but because of Sekhmet's particular apotropaic qualities and the role of Child Heru in various spells featuring Them both, as well as Sepa's well-evidenced protective/preservative functions, Heru-Sepa's apotropaic quality is reasonably assumed. And, like I said in the post you quoted me from, veritably EVERY God is "invokable" against disease. ;)

There is MUCH more on the (primarily Heliopolitan) Wesir-Sepa syncretism by comparison, which Edward Butler gets into within his Henadology entry for Sepa here.

I hope this helps!

Oh so many responses! Twas not expecting that!

I have done so much research today my head is spinning and I managed to develop a headache heh.

Hakenensenu - I read that but I think off of their tumblr! I do appreciate the link to their actual website! It has some interesting and useful UPG.

Raheri - I saw lots of info for Wesir-Sepa and Heru-Wesir syncs, So I am sure something could be UPG'd between the three of them, not to mention Yinepu who I found as Yinepu-Wesir and Yinepu-Heru and Yinepu-Sepa today (didn't help the head spinning). So much squishyness.

Sedjfai - Yes, the festival for IV Peret 28 is what got me interested; that is the day I was born so I have been looking into the Names in festival that day. Lots of Heru, But Heru-Sepa stuck out the most and I can't get Him out of my head. I guess if Heru-Sepa is a very regional deity it may be hard to find solid evidence of that specific sync/aspect, so I feel like UPG will be most of what I can get. Thank you for the Henadology link though, I hadn't found that somehow yet!

Thank you all for the information! I have a folder in my bookmarks for Sepa now so maybe when I am less headachy from excessive online reading all of it will click better.

Senebty for now!

I don't know much about Sepa, but recently the egyptologist Francisco Neves posted in a egiptology group three drawings of his of Sepa, and they are probably historical attested images:
