Closeted Kemet eyeing the beginner's course...
« on: August 13, 2021, 08:48:54 pm »
Greetings & em hotep, everyone! My humblest henu to all the Neteri & you! 🌼

As my thread title implied, I am secretly a recent follower of the Kemetic faith looking to join the beginner's course. I was wondering, for beginners' class, if I need to do physical rituals as I have very little privacy (& approval for anything pagan) in my living area?

I practice meditation regularly & have several crystals & both aren't deemed odd by people who live with me. But physical imageries of the Neter (ie. statues, pictures) is off-limit for now, at least until I get my own space!

Any tips to perform rituals/devotions discreetly? Also so far, I have employed an astral temple to perform more elaborate rituals there so I looked like I'm meditating to unsuspecting eyes. I don't think the Names I've encountered minded, They've been very surprisingly understanding! But I was wondering if I need to do irl rituals if I decide to take the beginner's course.

A little more about me: my pronouns is she/they. I practiced divination (tarot, oracle, etc.) & energy work since 2014 & around that time too, I began to receive signs & messages from the Lady Aset. I have only began to put more thoughts (& became more convinced that this isn't just a one-off thing lol) beginning of 2021, when I began to research more of Kemeticism (important terms, the epithets of Names, the cosmology, code of conduct, simple rituals, offerings, etc.) in order to pay the Names a more deserving respect!

Welcome to the House of Netjer!

I do believe that as part of the beginners class they expect you to do physical shrine rites, but I don't think it's often and I don't know if it's a requirement or a strong encouragement. Aside from that, I would recommend what you're doing. Also, you may add offerings to your practice. As part of our practice here, we make offerings the same way that the ancients did--that is, we offer the Gods something, and They then offer those things back to us. So, for example, if you wanted to offer a cookie to Bast, you could just simply say a prayer to Bast saying "I offer this to you that You may enjoy it with me" and wait a few minutes so that Bast can enjoy the 'essence' of the offering. Then, you are welcome to consume it (or use it, if it's a piece of jewelry or a scented oil or something).

Best of luck with your practice. I hope you are able to find an acceptable way to practice your faith however it is you wish to.

Em hotep, and welcome!

The beginner’s course is definitely a great way to learn a bit about the temple, and make some new like-minded friends! (It’s actually how I met my roommate!)

I do seem to recall though there’s a discouragement on joining if practicing is going to endanger you or cause strife in your current living situation. The set up of a shrine and practice of a rite is part of the course, and while how often you practice is ultimately up to you, if a shrine may cause you grief, it may be best to wait.

However, I am not the beginner’s course leader nor a teacher, so if one would like to step in and correct me, feel free.

Either way, I’m glad to hear the Netjeru are in your life! May you find what you seek!

Good journey!

Em hotep and welcome! While the beginner's course does require a small amount of ritual, no pictures or images of Netjer are required. I hope you can find a way to work around your current limitations.

Your astral temple practice sounds very cool. :)

Em Hotep

the Beginner Class does teach about shrine building but only you will decide when you are ready to do rituals.
You do NOT have to do rituals during the Beginner Class if you don't feel ready to do so for any reason.
The Beginner Class teaches as well that you don't need to have permanent shrines.
It's totally fine to assemble shrines only when you want to do rituals and to disassemble the shrine when it isn't needed
