Indeed! The bit about being "a masked deity" was interesting.

Yup!  That weird face that the Bes image bears isn't His face -- it's a mask.

I've read it in one of Erik Hornung's books. Also a few of my mother's text books for her egyptology course mentioned it along with the fact He is viewed as front on and not side on, indicating He has more than one side to Him.

To make the issue even more confusing, the Bes image isn't always Bes.

Half a dozen other Names are occasionally depicted with the Bes image in art, most of whom are oddball forms of Heru-wer.  Sometimes Bes is Bes.  Sometimes He is a Netjeri -- a mask other gods wear.

(Yes, yes, yes, all of the Mexican wrestler and "The Mask" jokes have been made already ;) )

If you think about it too much, your head will pop.  In the end, I found that the Bes I get is just Bes.  I broke my brain for a while trying to do the whole AAAAH IS HE HERU-WER OR WHAT I DON'T GET IT, but I found it was better to just take Him on His own terms.

Another thing that a lot of people don't realize about the Bes image is that it isn't really a dwarf.  Dr. James F. Romano (who also pretty much conclusively proved that Bes is a native Egyptian deity and not imported from parts unknown) put together some pretty compelling evidence that the Bes image evolved from an image of a lion standing on its hind legs.  So He already had the biq connection, now He's off with the lions...

And you folks wonder why I'm so mixed up? ;)

Of all of us, I think that Bestekeni has one of the closest relationships with her Parent of anyone in the House...additionally, on the Wepwawet Wiki page for Bes the fact that He is wearing a mask is mentioned.  Believe it or not, Marvel Comics did some research on Bes as well, and in other discussions with Hemet (AUS) as well, and I believe in one of the fellowship chats (I can't find the log right now) but she does mention he is wearing a mask.

[color:#993399]I appreciate all of your replies!  Wow!  I never read/heard that before, as I said!  Thanks for teaching me something new, again. ;)

The reason why I questioned it, besides it being new, is also that sticking one's tongue out could be construed with a sexual meaning, or even a threating meaning. (I'm always sticking my tongue out, but - usually never for those two meaning!)

Wow!  I am really speechless (which is hard for someone's who feels she has to have an answer for and to everything - a good, truthful answer.  Don't ask why, it's just past and built psychology.)  Again, thank you three!

PS:  Bestekeni, you're not 'mixed up'. :)[/color]

The tongue thing is a threatening gesture.  That's Him facing off to demons, saying, "Bring it."

You beat me to it but exactly. I have family in New Zealand who are Maori and they explained it to me. Interestingly, their native "dance" to show their prowess and fierceness is called the haka. Coincidence? I think not :)

Yeah, when I first read that there was a huuuge lightbulb moment.  Dr. Romano's dissertation is pretty interesting.  Then again, I might be a little biased.
