Heru-sa-Aset's falcon
« on: February 09, 2009, 08:32:03 pm »
Em hotep.

Does anyone know if there was a specific falcon associated with Heru-sa-Aset?

I found a reference to the Saker Falcon as the "Spirit of Horus" but that was on an art piece, and the Saker falcon is not native to Egypt. It is the most sought after falcon to use for hunting in the Middle East, so might have been imported by the wealthy.

I also found a reference to the Sooty Falcon  (Link), which is native.

I ask because I am setting up a small shrine for Him, and would like to include a picture of the most appropriate falcon.

Thanks for your help,

Em Hotep Catlin *henu*,

for me it was always a Peregrin falcon because of the specific markings. But I am not sure if the Egyptian's had a strict association with a certain falcon. Kees said in his book "Götterglaube im alten Ägypten" that they found mummies of peregrin falcons, kestrels, sparrow hawks and kites.

I've heard mostly the Lanner falcon described as being "The Falcon" for the falcon-headed deities. I'm inclined to believe this, since the markings on the head of this falcon also appear on the heads of falcon-headed deities when they are depicted, but I unfortunately don't recall where I got that information.

I have been directed to the red-tailed hawk whenever I have asked father, which is quite strange considering it's primarily found in America. I am sure the peregrine falcon is the one depicted, however, I have specific ties to the red-tailed hawk, and the Herus are usually referred to as hawk-headed, so I see no problem with my associating the red-tail with Heru-sa-Aset.(especially since He pointed it out to me! ;-])

I often "get" Bast-Mut as a cougar, so it makes perfect sense to me.  :)

I have had that same intuition, whenever I see a red tailed hawk particularly when traveling, a strong Heru vibe, and a comforting feeling.

LOL, They're a few red-tails living around the area that my house is in, and occasionally I'll get a Heru vibe from them (usually Heruakhty, but that's him checking up on me).

As Netjer and it's Names are not limited to any form, I find it perfectly acceptable that They would choose forms familiar to the people They are interacting with. (I get Sobek as an alligator)

Red tail Hawks are pretty commond in PA, so that works for me, too!

I'm lucky - I've some friends that are fully licensed & work with several different types of raptors.
(Sadly, they've recently moved and I don't get to see them or their birds nearly as often.)

I never much saw a connection with red-tails myself (I might be biased as she pooped on me on one occasion - and I am so not going anywhere near trying to figure out why one of Heru's creatures would do that to me.) but I very much can see what you mean with other falcons & hawks. Peregrines are just so majestic and regal its hard not to see something extraordinary there. Even in the tiny kestrel you can see the reason these creatures are so associated with the Heru Names.

Of course, I tend to associate my Father with a lanner falcon like THIS or   THIS but that's just my own mind-set.  :)

I see alot of raptors where I live.

I get the Heru-Sa-Aset vibe from the red shoulder and red tail hawks. We also have the  snail kite  that gives me that same impression.
The  coopers hawk  is how I perceive My father. Though the  osprey kinda also seems right too.

I've always assoicated Heru with the sparrow hawk or American kestrel. One day a male sparrow hawk sat on my windowsil.
